Planning for campus space reallocation

Submitted by Cindy Bontrager, vice president for administration and finance

Multiple major construction projects on the Manhattan campus will be completed in the next few years. Many questions have been raised about how the space being vacated will be reallocated, and if there will be a formal process to decide how to utilize the space. At the request of President Schulz, Facilities Campus Planning has worked with the Office of the Provost, President’s Cabinet, Deans Council and others to develop a formal, transparent proposal and decision-making process for reallocating vacated space.

The 2015 Space Migration project is a formal space planning initiative designed to optimize the unique opportunities created by new construction. For the first time in decades, significant space on our Manhattan campus will be available for reallocation. The 2015 Space Migration project will focus on the organization of Manhattan campus space to assist the university in reaching its long-range goals consistent with K-State 2025 and the Campus Master Plan.

During the next few weeks, procedures and application materials will be finalized and the 2015 Space Migration Project will be formally launched the week of April 6. By mid-April, we will begin accepting space concept proposals from deans and vice presidents. To promote transparency, all proposals will be made available on the Campus Planning website throughout the duration of the project. All other information, including the procedures, concept and proposal forms, and evaluation and rating criteria, also will be available. The goal is to have the president announce the final decisions by mid-September.
