Food safety researcher named to national advisory committee

Submitted by Randall Phebus

Randall Phebus, professor of food safety in the animal sciences and industry department and core faculty at the Food Science Institute, was recently appointed to serve a two-year term on the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection.

The purpose of the committee is to provide advice to the secretary of agriculture concerning state and federal programs with respect to meat, poultry and processed egg products inspection; food safety; and other matters that fall within the scope of the Federal Meat Inspection Act, Poultry Products Inspection Act and the Egg Products Inspection Act.

The secretary of agriculture appoints the membership of the committee. Membership is selected based on diverse capabilities distinguished by an individual's knowledge and interest in meat and poultry safety and other U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Safety and Inspection Service responsibilities. Members are drawn from representatives of state and local governments; industry and trade associations; public health, scientific, and academic communities; and consumers and consumer organizations.
