Ganga Hettiarachchi, associate professor of agronomy, was elected as chair of the International Union of Soil Sciences Commission 4.2 soils, food security and human health. Her term as chair will extend until 2018. This continues to strengthen the department's ties to the international scientific community.

The International Union of Soil Sciences is the global union of soil scientists. The objectives of the union are to promote all branches of soil science, and to support all soil scientists across the world in the pursuit of their activities.

The scientific activities of International Union of Soil Sciences are undertaken through four divisions and each division has four to six commissions. The divisions and commissions are headed by a chairperson and two vice chairs.
