Grain science and industry professor to present Vernon Larson International Lecture Dec. 6

Sajid Alavi, associate professor of grain science and industry, will present the next Vernon Larson International Lecture at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6. The luncheon portion of the event begins at 11:45 a.m.

Alavi's lecture is titled "Food Security and Value Addition: International Experiences."

Reservations are requested for the luncheon by Friday and can be made by email or by phone (532-5990). Attendees have the option of only attending the lecture. The event is at the Holiday Inn at the Campus.

The K-State Friends of International Programs and the office of international programs sponsor the lecture and luncheon.

Alavi received his doctorate in food science with specialization in food engineering from Cornell University in 2002. He has a master of science degree in agricultural and biological engineering from Penn State University and bachelor of science degree in agricultural engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters. He is a member of the AACC International, the premier professional association of cereal scientists and processors worldwide; Institute of Food Technologists; and American Institute of Chemical Engineering. In 2010, Alavi was awarded the Young Research Scientist Award by AACC International, a prestigious honor bestowed on individuals under the age of 40 years for outstanding contributions to cereal science in basic and applied research. The impact of his work in the area of processing, nutrition and agricultural value addition has local, national and global dimensions, and his international experiences include South Asia, Southern Africa, Central America, China and Europe.
