Call for proposals graduate, undergraduate research awards

By Lisa Borello

The Wheat Genetics Resource Center and the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center invite proposals from undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research in the area of wheat improvement. Awards will range from $10,000 to $20,000. The deadline for submission is Oct. 17.

Graduate and undergraduate students in the areas of wheat genetics, genomics, pathology, entomology, quality and related topics are eligible to apply. Proposals utilizing Wheat Genetics Resource Center are encouraged but all highly meritorious proposals related to wheat improvement will be considered. The proposed work should be one year in duration and may be possibly renewable for one additional year. Total award requests for a one-year period are limited to $20,000 for graduates students and $10,000 for undergraduate students. As part of the award, students are expected to include up to $1,500 for travel request to annual society meetings to present research findings. Awards will be made to the principal investigator advising the student project and can be used for salary, supplies, research and conference travel, and other research support.

Proposal must be submitted in electronic form to bsgill@k-state.edu and copied to wzorrilla@earthsharvest.org by Oct. 17. Proposals should include a one-page proposal synopsis form — contact wzorrilla@earthsharvest.org for a copy of the required template — and a one-page letter of reference from the K-State faculty advising the project.

Following initial review, students with selected proposals will be invited to present the proposal to the Industry Advisory Board for evaluation at the upcoming Wheat Genetics Resource Center and Industry/University Cooperative Research Center meeting in Fort Collins, Colorado, Nov. 18-19. The proposal timeline is provided below.

Wheat Genetics Resource Center and Industry/University Cooperative Research Center conducts precompetitive research funded by a consortium of public and private organizations active in wheat improvement and wheat grain end uses.
