Seven students receive awards at Research Experience for Undergraduates poster session

By Keith Rutlin

The joint Research Experience for Undergraduates poster session was July 31 in the K-State Student Union.

According to Mary Rezac, director for the K-State Center for Sustainable Energy, the level of research accomplishment achieved this past summer was impressive in all posters that were displayed. The outstanding quality of the posters and presentations given at the poster session made selection of the poster awards more challenging.

Nearly 45 students presented their research and participated in the Summer Academy in Sustainable BioEnergy Research Experiences for Undergraduates; the Earth, Wind, and Fire: Sustainable Energy for the 21st Century Research Experiences for Undergraduates; the Climate Change and Mitigation Research Experiences for Undergraduates program; the Chemistry Biosecurity Research Experiences for Undergraduates; Undergraduate Research and Mentoring in Ecological Genomics; and the Laser-matter Interactions at the Atomic and Nanoscales: Physics Research Experiences for Undergraduates.

The following are the names of the students with top posters, their attending university and their K-State research experience program. Each awardee received $375:

  • Wyatt Behn, University of Nebraska, Kearney, Physics
  • Erika Demel, University of Dallas, Chemical Engineering
  • Karla Morrissey, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Chemical Engineering
  • Halle Sparks, Kansas State University, Biology

The following are the names of the students who received the People's Choice Awards, the monetary award, their attending university and their K-State research experience program:

  • Austin Raithel, $250, Truman State University, Chemistry Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
  • Ashton Cheatham, $150, University of Central Arkansas, Chemistry Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
