Civil engineering graduate students cited for poster presentations

By Mary Rankin

Syeda Rubaiyat Aziz and Alireza Shams, Kansas State University graduate students in civil engineering, won two of the top three student awards for their poster presentations at the 2014 Joint Midwestern and Western District Institute of Transportation Engineers annual conference June 30 to July 2 in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Aziz's poster was "Significance of Weather Adversity on Motor Vehicle Related Crashes in Kansas." Sham's entry was "Safety Effectiveness of Roundabout Installation at State Highways in Kansas." Their major professor is Sunanda Dissanayake, professor of civil engineering. Students from 24 states participated in the joint meeting competition.

Four other civil engineering graduate students from the institute's K-State student chapter, Daniel Mealiff, Hojr Momeni, Himanshu Patel and Ishani Dias, also presented posters. They were accompanied by their faculty adviser, Robert Stokes, professor and department head of civil engineering.
