Submitted by Mary Rankin

Andrew Bernica, Topeka, spring 2014 graduate in civil engineering, has been awarded two scholarships from the American Concrete Institute, or ACI, in support of his graduate studies.

At the national level, Bernica was selected by the institute's foundation to receive the $3,000 American Concrete Institute W. Gene Corley Memorial Scholarship. On the state level, the Kansas chapter of American Concrete Institute has chosen Bernica to receive its $1,000 Kansas Board/American Concrete Institute Scholarship.

Bernica will begin graduate studies at Kansas State University in fall 2014 under the supervision of Hayder Rasheed, professor of civil engineering, working on a Kansas Transportation Research and New Developments, or K-TRAN, project.

K-TRAN is an ongoing, cooperative and comprehensive research program addressing transportation needs of the state of Kansas. It utilizes academic and research resources from the Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. Projects included in the annual research program are jointly developed by professionals at all three entities.
