Kansas State Forensics Team places 20th in the nation

Submitted by Tamra Patterson

The Kansas State collegiate speech team placed in the top 20 of 83 teams that qualified for the American Forensics Association-National Individual Events Tournament, or AFA-NIET, April 4-7 at Arizona State University in Tempe. K-State has finished in the top 20 21 times in the last 22 years.

Competing against 525 students in 1,573 events, the team advanced two people to elimination rounds. Davis Mattek was a national semifinalist — top 12 — in impromptu speaking, and Adam Mason was a national quarterfinalist — top 24 — in informative speaking.

Along with Mattek and Mason, the K-State students competing at the event included Joseph Valenti, Johanna Kelly, Cameron McLaughlin, Jesse Porter and Jessica Forkell.
