Broyles-González works included in American ethnic studies anthology published in Italy

Submitted by Susan Brabec

The Firenze University Press in Italy has published a major American ethnic studies anthology that includes research articles from Italian and American scholars. The anthology is titled "The Shade of the Sahuaro/La sombra del sahuaro." It unites selections from proceedings of the International Forum for Study of the Cultures of the American Southwest and was published in late 2013.

The volume includes three articles by Yolanda Broyles-González, American ethnic studies department head, which include one in the Native American section and two in the Mexican American segment of the volume. One of those articles, "Norteño Borderlands Cumbia Circuitry: Selena Quintanilla and Celso Piña," is the very first treatment of the borderlands music known as cumbia, an indigenous music/dance form that originated in Colombia and migrated to the U.S. and Mexico 70 years ago.

Broyles-González' article, "The Sound Tracks of Borderlands Mujerista Movements: Remembering Chelo Silva," examines the transnational musical career of Chicana icon Chelo Silva, while her article "Healing California Her/History: The Chumash Native People," calls for a revisioning of California history through the epistemological lens of Indigenous women.

The volume is edited by professors Geatano Prampolini and Annamaria Pinazzi.
