K-State Olathe looks to past, present and future at time capsule ceremony

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Kansas State University Olathe and its team are already planning for the future. On Thursday, Oct. 27, approximately 50 people came together to commemorate history in the making by placing a time capsule into the wall of the Olathe campus’ state-of-the-art facility.

The purple capsule, which was designed by J.P. Elliott of the Weitz Company, is to be opened in 50 years — 2061 — and contains many relevant items, including:

• Newspapers: The Manhattan Mercury, The Kansas City Star, USA Today, The Olathe News and an advertising supplement from the Kansas City Business Journal

• K-Stater magazine and Modern Builder magazine

• Various materials concerning the development and construction of K-State Olathe, such as renderings and pictures from the Weitz Company, complete construction documents from 360 Architects, comment cards and handouts from the grand opening.

• Miscellaneous items to commemorate Olathe and the campus, including the book “Trails, Rails & Tales: Olathe’s first 150 years,” newsletters, a K-State Olathe bag and world clock, business cards, video of the grand opening, and “Sustainable Success Stories” — a framed award for the K-State Olathe campus/Kansas Bioscience Park.

Kansas State University President Kirk Schulz, Provost April Mason and Olathe CEO Dan Richardson attended, as well as many community members who helped make the campus possible, including Olathe Mayor Michael Copeland and members of the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle Authority.

Donations to the capsule were made by The Weitz Company, 360 Architects, Schlagel & Associates, John A. Marshall and the city of Olathe.
