Asbestos awareness for building occupants begins Jan. 24

By Shanna Legleiter

The environmental health and safety department is offering asbestos awareness training to anyone interested in learning more about what asbestos is, health concerns associated with it and where it can be found on campus.

Training classes will be offered once a month in the department's training room 011, 108 Edwards Hall. Arrangements can also be made with the instructor Shane Garrett to make the presentation to an individual department. Contact 785-532-5856 or email safety@k-state.edu with questions.

Asbestos can be found in almost every building on campus with the exception of those built in the last few years. It is most common to find asbestos in any building built before 1981.

We have found asbestos applied to ceilings, between floors, vermiculite insulation, on plumbing, inside some doors, as parts of HVAC systems, air ducts, floor tiles, glues and mastics, as well as architectural features. As long as the asbestos is not damaged, there is no hazard to building occupants. If the asbestos is damaged, we try to get it fixed as quickly as possible to avoid endangering building occupants.

All university employees are encouraged to attend this training. It is the employee's responsibility to obtain their necessary departmental approvals prior to enrolling.

Register for training through HRIS Self_Enrollment or email training@k-state.edu and include your name, department, employee ID number, course title, number — WTD166 — and date desired.

Classes and times for the next six months:

  • Jan. 24, 2014, 1:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 6, 2014, 1:30 p.m.
  • March 7, 2014, 10 a.m.
