Dec. 4 Classified Senate notes

Submitted by Susan Erichsen

Highlights from the Dec. 4 Classified Senate meeting. A draft of the meeting minutes is available here.

Sue Peterson, director of governmental relations, updated the senate on the work she has been doing with the Kansas Legislature. Gov. Brownback will deliver his State of the State address on Jan. 15, 2014, and everyone is encouraged to listen.

Janice Taggart, senate president, reported that the Executive Council met with President Schulz on Nov. 13. He was presented with a letter from the senate stating our appreciation of his efforts in support of all supervisors of classified employees attending supervisory training. Discussion was held regarding the alternative service vote and how employees would be notified of the outcome.

Committee reports:

Legislative Affairs Committee — Lesa Reves suggested everyone should read the Topeka Capital Journal article online about KPERS posted on Dec. 3.

Alternative Service Committee

From Carol Marden:

• Classified employees need to provide their input for the Employee Handbook by Dec. 24.  Changes made to the handbook will be made in a separate document.

• A plan for the governance change needs to be put into place, senate member proposals will be introduced and discussed at the January meeting. (i.e. should a core or steering committee be formed to oversee changes and work with HR on the transition?)

• The current Alternative Service Committee will begin the phase out/transfer process to senate. Exception will be continued involvement with human resources and senate on establishing the new pay plan for university support staff.

• It was recommended that a joint meeting be conducted with the senate and the Alternative Service Committee.

Next meeting of the Classified Senate will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, in the Cottonwood Room of the K-State Student Union.
