Seeing green: Earth Day celebration to include variety of environmental events

Submitted by Julie Fosberg

A picture can be worth a thousand words, so a Kansas State University environmental organization hopes to turn those words into a bold statement about the world.

K-State's Students for Environmental Action, an ecological advocacy organization, has arranged several events for Earth Day 2011, Friday, April 22. The celebration will include a festival and trade show from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bosco Student Plaza. More than 25 booths from earth-friendly campus and community organizations will be included. Other activities will include a T-shirt swap, an appearance by the Eco-Enforcer, prize giveaways, and a vegan taste-test. The event will also feature acoustic music from 11 a.m. to noon and guest speakers from noon to 1 p.m.

K-State pride and environmental awareness will be on further display for the all-university campus photo. Students and faculty are encouraged to wear a purple or green shirt to Memorial Stadium, arriving by 1:15 p.m. Volunteers will organize all attendees into a K-State world. K-State photo services will take an aerial photograph at 1:30 p.m.

Following the photo, students and faculty are invited to remain at Memorial Stadium for the Campus Chill-Out, an effort to honor K-State environmental advancement and be in solidarity with environmentalism worldwide.

Zack Pistora, senior in political science, Lawrence, helped to organize the events as the president of Students for Environmental Action. He hopes the events convey a sense of unity.

"Each one of us can make a difference, but when we come together we can really make change," he said.

"We hope that our university -- students, faculty, and staff alike -- can come together to celebrate our accomplishments and push for improvements in terms of environmental and humanitarian efforts," Pistora said. "Earth Day at K-State should be a lot of fun and very educational."
