Native American Heritage Month events

By Georgia E. N. Perez

The Native American Student Association will host two events Nov. 7 as part of Native American Heritage Month.

Reuben IronHorse-Kent of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska will present his works in ceramics and Missouri River Valley-style pottery from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the K-State Student Union courtyard on the ground floor. Mike Perez of Mexican decent also will show part of his collection of Native American works along with his folk art of creating tomorrow's artifacts today. Native American students will offer dream catchers for a donation at this event.

Big Soldier Creek Dancers from the Potawatomi Prairie Band Reservation and other areas will perform traditional and modern native dances from noon to 1 p.m., also in the Union.

Come talk one-on-one with IronHorse-Kent, Perez or native students and stay for the performance of the dancers during the traditional lunch hour.

If you are unable to attend this event, our Native American Student Association will have a second day of events Nov. 14 with other presenters and crafting events. For further information, please contact Brandy Tholstrup, association president, or Georgia Perez, association advisor.
