Assistance available for K-State students impacted by recent Manhattan flooding

By Scott Jones

The K-State community is doing its part to assist students impacted by flooding caused by recent heavy rains in Manhattan. Approximately 75 K-Staters who have local addresses in flooded areas are registered for summer school.

Many of these students have been unexpectedly, and in some cases permanently, displaced from their Manhattan residence. Some have lost most, if not all, personal belongings. Others are unable to return until an inspection for safety or insurance purposes has been conducted.

The Office of Student Life has emailed students residing in the flooded areas informing them of Manhattan and K-State resources available during this trying time. Faculty and staff should also be aware of these resources, which include:

  • K-State Housing and Dining, 785-532 6453, housing@k-state.edu, offering flexible housing and dining contracts for displaced students.
  • K-State Office of Student Life, 785-532-6432, stulife@k-state.edu, available to verify the circumstance of impacted students and to notify professors to request reasonable accommodations if needed. Any such accommodations are at the sole discretion of the faculty member.
  • K-State Financial Assistance, 785-532 6420, finaid@k-state.edu, available to process short-term emergency loan requests of up to $400 to assist students with immediate transition needs.
  • K-State PROUD. Grant applications are available at www.found.ksu.edu/forms/self_nominee_form.php . The PROUD committee meets monthly during summer to review applications.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Life for further information.
