K-State's Wheat Genetics Resource Center mentioned on 'Jeopardy!'

Submitted by Mary Lou Peter

Kansas State University’s Wheat Genetics Resource Center was part of one of the puzzles on the television game show "Jeopardy!" on Oct. 14.

The "Jeopardy!" category: State the state.

The answer: Located in Manhattan (no, not that one), it has the Wheat Genetics Resource Center and a nuclear reactor. Name the state.

The correct question: What is Kansas State?

Aman Gill, doctoral student and assistant professor at Pratt College in Brooklyn, N.Y., was tipped off to the segment by a friend. Gill sent a text message to his dad, who happens to be Wheat Genetics Resource Center director Bikram Gill.

The Wheat Genetics Resource Center at K-State is home to a gene bank holding more than 12,000 strains of wild and ancient wheat and genetic stocks. It collects and uses wheat germ plasm for crop improvement by broadening the crop genetic base and supports the free exchange of materials, technology and new knowledge in genetics and biotechnology among the world's public and private organizations. The center sponsors graduate and postgraduate students and visiting scientists for academic training and advanced research in its laboratories.
