Fall 2013 contract accords webinar series

Submitted by Caron Berges

The University-Industry Demonstration Partnership, or UIDP, is offering a contract accords webinar series free of charge to its member institutions, such as Kansas State University. The webinars will enhance understanding of contract accords and allow for interaction with experts in these fields.

The office of research and sponsored programs has registered the university to participate in the webinars from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Dates and locations vary with subject. No RSVP is required. Any interested faculty and staff who work with industry sponsored research projects are invited to attend webinars on the following topics:

  • Gifts on Oct. 1 in 227 K-State Student Union
  • Data use agreements on Oct. 15 in 209 K-State Student Union
  • Specialized services on Oct. 29 in 226 K-State Student Union
  • Conflict of interest on Nov. 19 in 226 K-State Student Union

The university has been an active member of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership, or UIDP, since 2006 in an effort to continually strengthen K-State's relationships with industry partners that support sponsored research at K-State.

The partnership is an organization of universities and companies supported by The National Academies through the Government University Industry Research Roundtable, or GUIRR, that is committed to building a stronger relationship between industry and academia. K-State's university-industry membership is directly tied to the university’s commitment to increase its industry sponsored research activities as part of the K-State 2025 initiative.

Since its inception the partnership, through a strategically assembled and dedicated working group composed of experienced research administration professionals from academia and industry, has crafted contract accords to provide guidance on commonly negotiated clauses in collaborative research agreements between companies and universities.

Each contract accord provides background on the topics and smart approaches for efficiently coming to mutually agreeable conditions. Institutions can use these contract accords as practical guidance and detailed reference material to help both parties understand typical issues, address them and thereby collaborate more effectively.

Available online, 15 contract accords have been published. In each webinar, a single contract accord will be featured to allow for in-depth exploration of that topic. Representatives from industry and academia will speak, followed by an opportunity for question and answer. The first webinar in the fall 2013 series is on giftsThis webinar will explore the distinctions between gifts and grants and offer strategies for finding common understanding between the university recipient and industry donor.
