Things I Wish I had Known before Studying Abroad
by Rachel Meether
- It is crucial to study the culture of the country you are visiting before jumping off the plane. Be aware of offensive hand gestures, whether tipping is acceptable, appropriate dress, etc.
- Be aware of the weather in the country you are traveling to.
- Americans stand out where ever we go. Be aware of how Americans are viewed by the culture you are visiting- whether positive or negative. Be attentive to this fact and use this as a tool for safety.
- Always, always, always travel in numbers.
- Bring a lock for your suitcase and use it when your suitcase in unattended.
- Keep your passport or some form of identification on you at all times.
- Drink lots of water and get plenty sleep.
- Bring a camera, with extra batteries and memory.
- Be aware of airline luggage charges and weight limitations for when/if you bring valuables back.
- Budget wisely. Have a plan in case you run out of money or have your money stolen.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes. You do not want to be worrying about your shoes while you should be focusing on the amazing new country around you.
- Depending upon your situation, do not bring a lot of valuables on your trip.
- Do not bring a different outfit for every day. Prepare to mix-and-match, re-wear clothes, or find a laundry mat.
- Ultimately, have fun. Allow yourself to soak in the once-in-a-lifetime experience. Make it memorable!
