MLANG 001 Placeholder Course
All KSU students who will be transferring credit from a university abroad back to KSU must enroll in the study abroad placeholder course, MLANG 001.
The MLANG placeholder course holds a student's spot at KSU while they are abroad. That means…
- You will be able to keep your active K-State student status.
- You will be eligible for financial aid.
- You will be allowed get credit of studying abroad.
- You will be able you to use your K-State email.
- You will keep access to iSIS.
- Your study abroad experience will be included on your K-State transcripts.
- The K-State Cashiers Office is aware that you will be studying abroad. The Study Abroad Director will enroll you in MLANG 001.
All students are enrolled for 15 credits for a semester or 6 credits for the summer, regardless of academic level or how many credits will actually be taken abroad. Students are not be charged tuition based on the number of credits of enrollment in the MLANG course. Students will be charged a $25 enrollment fee by the Cashier's Office once they are enrolled in MLANG 001.
It is important that students have all holds removed from their student account, and do not have other regular course enrollment at K-State for the term abroad, as these will prevent the Director of Study Abroad from being able to enroll a student into the MLANG placeholder course.
Graduate students must complete the Special Enrollment Access Form in order to enroll in this Undergraduate level placeholder course. While this is an Undergraduate level course, as long as the transcripts received from abroad indicate that Graduate level courses were taken, the credit will transfer back as Graduate level credit.
Students in the College of Business should contact their Academic Advisor about enrolling in an additional business study abroad course.
Students in the Honors Society, should contact the University Honors Program about enrolling in an additional study abroad course.
Academic Approval
All students who study abroad must fill out an Academic Approval Form, found in their online K-State application, before going abroad. The Academic Approval form is an agreement showing how certain courses abroad will transfer back to KSU, and is documentation for the Office of Student Financial Assistance that a student will be taking enough credits to qualify for Financial Aid.
Occasionally students arrive at their host university and discover that they cannot enroll in some of the classes they pick and must pick new classes. When this happens it is important that the student emails his/her Academic Advisor and Study Abroad Advisor about the new classes to determine the KSU equvalencies. The student and Academic Advisor can either complete a revised Academic Approval form at that time, or complete a Request for Validation of Credit when the student returns to KSU.
Modern Language Transfer Credit
Students who are planning to take language classes abroad have a slightly different credit transfer process. Although these student must still complete an Academic Approval Form, they must use the example on the form for indicating that they will be taking language credit, instead of indicating a specific course. This is because language classes are determined after taking a placement test upon arrival at the host university. This means that students cannot pre-plan and gain prior approval for the classes taken abroad. Instead, once accepted into a study abroad program, students taking language courses abroad should also complete the Modern Language Transfer Credit Worksheet. Then, upon the student's return to K-State, the Modern Languages Department will evaluate the transcript from abroad, and using the information on the Modern Language Transfer Credit Worksheet, will determine how the classes will count toward the student's degree of study.
Every semester there are several Language Credit Sessions hosted by the Study Abroad Office and Modern Languages Department. Attendance to one of these sessions is required for students taking Spanish classes, and strongly recommended for other language students. Check out the Important Dates for the schedule of sessions.
