Internships & Community Service

These are only some of the opportunities available to for volunteering abroad.  Some are available in conjunction with study abroad programs, while others are not associated with coursework.  For those which are solely volunteer programs, you do not have to apply through the Office of International Programs, but please let us when and where you intend to volunteer abroad.  We are happy to assist you in the process of planning travel abroad.

K-State Affiliates

Ajou University

Ajou University is located in Suwon, Rep. of Korea. The Suwon Youth Center, the local organization close-by campus provides a volunteer program for international exchange students at Ajou. The more information is given to the students through Office of International Affairs.

Americas Journalism Training (AJT)

AJT provides University coursework and a professional internship in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The AJT program provides the tools, training, and support a student needs in a bilingual, foreign setting so they can quickly assimilate, gain unique professional experience and have the comfort level and personalized attention necessary to enjoy their stay in Buenos Aires. 

Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)

CIEE coordinates hundreds of volunteer opportunities in thirty countries around the world. There is a wide-variety of projects, including community-based work, working with children, and environmental and archeological projects. You might plant trees in the South Iceland Farm Forest, or construct a footpath along the Kladeos River in Greece, or excavate an archaeological dig in Spain.  Most projects range from 2 to 4 weeks and take place between late June and September. Add volunteering to your semester or summer study abroad program! CIEE arranges free room and board with host families.

International Studies Abroad
(ISA)

Participation in volunteer opportunities abroad is an excellent way to immerse oneself in another country's way of life. ISA-ELAP is an enriching experience for proficient Spanish speakers who are seeking to contribute to an organization's responsibilities and mission while simultaneously learning about themselves in an unfamiliar, and at times, challenging environment.

International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP)

Give a helping hand while experiencing a new culture and traveling to a new place!  ISEP offers several great options to study at a university while also volunteering or working abroad.

Kansas State Community Service Program (CSP)

CSP offers students the opportunity to volunteer in a number of different countries. CSP International Teams are interdisciplinary teams of KSU students who are placed in developing countries for eight to ten weeks during the summer. Teams work with the community to plan and implement service projects during their stay. Possible host sites for the summer of 2006 include Mexico, Turkey, Russia, Guatemala and Brazil.

Lorenzo de’Medici

The volunteer club offers students the chance to work with several kinds of community service sectors, in collaboration with the most important volunteer associations working in Italy. Scuola Lorenzo de' Medici has always been in the forefront in the campaign against racism, discrimination and intolerance. For this reason, the volunteer club's main goal will be to allow LdM students to join the Italian volunteer community and connect them with the Italian social life.

World Endeavors

World Endeavors organizes volunteer work in India, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. You may choose a project where you work with street children or orphans, or one where you teach English to children. Or, work in the area of environmental or wildlife conservation. Health care, social welfare, and community development are other areas of volunteer work.

Other Programs

KSU students have used these programs in the past but the providers are not affiliated with our office, so we cannot verify the quality of their programs.

Universidad Veritas, Costa Rica

Veritas University organizes volunteer projects in wildlife preservation. Volunteers will work and live in national parks, wildlife shelters, or forest reserves.  Participants must have a high intermediate level of Spanish. Students may request work in specific areas of interest, such as species monitoring, turtle nesting, or botanical projects, if they submit the request several months in advance. Volunteering in Costa Rica could be added before or after a Veritas semester or summer study abroad program.

Global Crossroad Volunteer Abroad

Global Crossroad offers year-round volunteer projects for 2 to 12 weeks at a time. Global Crossroad’s international volunteer programs often focus on grassroots community development initiatives involving people who need urgent help – orphans, exploited women, children and the elderly. Global Crossroad offers numerous projects, including volunteering at an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka, working in an orphanage in Mexico, or teaching English in Mongolia.
