Application Process and Timeline

General Application Timeline

The application process may seem long and a bit overwhelming, but with the help of the Study Abroad Office, you will be able to find a program that is right for you.  Students are encouraged to come into our office to talk about studying abroad a couple of semester before you plan on going abroad.

  1. Meet with a Peer Advisor.  Peer Advisors will give you general and introductory information about study abroad and will be able to share their own experiences with you.
  2. Meet with your Study Abroad Advisor to discuss the programs you are interested in and to talk about the details and logistics of the various programs.  Meeting with your Study Abroad Advisor more than once is fine!  The earlier you come in to talk to the study abroad office, the better. There are a lot of options out there and the initial research for programs and funding can take time.
  3. Apply for your passport.
  4. Start the application.  You will complete a K-State Study Abroad Application and the application for your host program simultaneously.   There is no application fee for the K-State application, but some host programs do charge a fee.   Make sure you pay close attention to the K-State Study Abroad application deadline and the deadlines of your host program.  Typically, applications are due the semester before you plan on going abroad.
  5. Acceptance. Once you have been acceptance by K-State you will have to wait for acceptance from your host program, which may take up to a month or longer.   At this time you will be prompted to turn in more documents to the Study Abroad Office.  Once accepted by you host program, you may have to turn in additional documents to them.
  6. Commit to your program.  Change your application status to ‘committed’ to make your participation in your study abroad program official!  You will be charged a $150 non-refundable study abroad fee at this time.
  7. Attend the mandatory country specific orientation for the country in which you will be studying.
  8. Apply for your visa.
  9. Book your flight.
