Teaching English as a Second Language in Guatemala

May 17-June 5, 2010

About
This program is a dual language practicum where students will spend 52 contact hours with Guatemalan students who are English language learners. They will work to develop a practicum portfolio which will encompass all four areas studied: methods, assessment, linguistics, and multicultural curriculum and materials. Students will stay with host families while they are abroad and will take various trips to local tourist attractions.

Course
Three hourse of undergraduate credit for EDCI 745/EDCI 746 or EDCI 740 will be awarded by K-State University upon successful completion of the course.

European Photography Study Tour in England and France

About
European Study of Photography study tour is a 3 credit hour, 600-level studio course that takes place in France and England, tracing the development of the medium of photography into a commercially and artistically viable process. History and on-site study centered on visitations to historic sites within this development and supplemented by lectures by course faculty. Photographic studio instruction on the visual strategies employed by early and contemporary photographers which the students will utilize their own production of digital images also overseen by the professor will be used throughout the duration of the study tour. For students who chose to follow a more academic approach they will have the opportunity to focus on research and submit a written discourse on the experience and their relationship to the history of the medium.

Agriculture and Food Processing in North India

About
This study abroad program is tailored for providing undergraduate and graduate students the experience of agricultural practices, food processing industry, and university life and culture of north India. India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is taking rapid strides in manufacturing industry and information technology; however, a majority of the population is heavily dependent on agriculture. The class will give students a first-hand experience of traditional agriculture practices in north India and the move towards more modern practices such as use of biotechnology, irrigation, mechanized farming, and bulk handling and storage of grain. Students will also be exposed to the fast emerging food processing sector in the country through visits to a large bakery, a modern flour mill, a tea estate and tea processing facility and a potato processing unit. The tour will also include a visit and 3-day stay at two large agricultural universities – Punjab Agricultural University and Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University. The remaining time in India will be used for touring sites of historical interest in the ancient and current capital city of Delhi, and learning about the north Indian culture through exchanges with domestic university students. A visit to the famous 17th century monument the Taj Mahal in the nearby city of Agra will also be part of this tour.

"Beijing, China: Encounter Chinese Culture"

About
This course will be held over a 3 week period during the summer. Students will meet on the K-State Manhattan campus for 1 week to read and discuss Chinese culture. Students will then spend 2 weeks in Beijing, China participating in cultural activities and lectures and visiting various landmarks.

Three hours of undergraduate for ENGL 395: Topics in English or three hours of graduate credit for ENGL 685: Special Topics in Rhetoric and Composition will be granted by Kansas State University upon successful completion of the course.

Service Learning in the development of inclusive Special Education Practices in Tanzania

About
This service learning project will provide pre-service teachers the opportunity to collaborate with K-State faculty and other special education professionals in Kansas to develop a deeper understanding of inclusive school practices such as co-teaching and differentiated instruction. This program offers a unique perspective to study special education policies and practices as they develop in a country which has only recently embraced the philosophy that persons with disabilities have rights as citizens.

Post Commuist Societies-Study Tour in Hungary, Ukraine, and Russia

About
“Post-Communist Societies” is a three-week educational tour of Hungary, Ukraine, and Russia. During this trip, students will learn about, discuss, and write about social transformations in post-communist Eastern Europe. We will cover such topics as post-communist space and mobility, class and inequalities, political democratization, youth culture and prospects, crime, global connections of transformation, human rights and civil society, security and conflict, religion and ethnicity and the changing family. Students will be able to make visits to political institutions, short collaborative working experience with NGOs, local family visits, and interaction with peer groups. Class will meet during the Spring 2010 semester and the study tour will be held in Summer 2010. Participation in the Spring 2010 course is a pre-requisite for participating in the study tour.

Agriculture Study Tour in South Africa

About
This program will provide students with the opportunity to explore and experience various aspects of African agriculture. Students will visit the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Table Mountain, a progressive feedlot and abattoir, local cattle and goat ranches, an agricultural university, sheep farms, the U.S. Embassy, breeders of indigenous cattle, crop farms, a game reserve, a cultural village, a national park, a crocodile farm, multiple city tours, and Victoria Falls.

Equine Tour in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco

About
This program is a 16-day intensive Animal Science study tour through Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Main areas of focus include production and management practices, major breeds and uses, and educational opportunities. There will also be trips to riding schools, equine breeding and training operations, and support and discipline-based facilities. Students will also become familiar with the history and cultures of these three countries.

K-State in Leipzig: Special Studies in German

About
K-State in Liepzig is a five-week linguistic and cultural immersion course:  intensive language instruction at the Herder Institute (Universität Leipzig) combined with a two-week, faculty-led tour of Saxony and Berlin, during which students will visit, experience, talk, and write about important German cultural and historical sites. Upon return to K-State (Fall 2010), students will share their experiences through presentations and discussions in lower-level German language classes.

The Scotland Studio Art Workshop is a study abroad course based in Edinburgh with course related excursions to the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Wildlife Disease Ecology Study Tour of Paraguay and Argentina

May 17 - June 6, 2010

About
The purpose of this course is to provide undergraduate juniors and seniors in Biology, graduate students in Biology, and KSUCVM veterinary students with a unique learning experience in wildlife disease ecology. South America is undergoing dramatic changes in agriculture, ecology and economy, all of which contribute to the increase in emerging infectious diseases worldwide. Students will travel throughout Paraguay to participate in active wildlife ecology research and veterinary science. Students will learn about the principles of disease surveillance, host ecology and epidemiology, both in the classroom and in the field. In addition, the students will attend the International Wildlife Disease Association conference in Iguazu Falls, Argentina. This conference will expose students to cutting edge research occurring in wildlife diseases.

Upon successful completion of the course, 4 hours of undergraduate, graduate, or veterinary medicine credits will be awarded for BIOL 697.

Brazil: Development, Environment and Creative Writing in the Brazilian Rain Forest

About
The program will take place in the Brazilian portion of the Amazon Basin, specifically the cities of Manaus, Amazonas State. For Geography and Biology students, the program begins in Manaus, with several days of initial lectures and excursions; continues for several days on an Amazonian boat, where students will have the opportunity to interact with local college students, spend time visiting the rainforest, old rubber plantations, and various other locations that demonstrate the decision of reconciling environmental protection with economic development. Students will do two pre-departure assignments, keep a daily journal during the trip, write four reflection papers, as well as a final essay. English students will complete some pre-trip reading and a written assignment, keep a daily journal during the trip, and complete three written assignments afterwards.

"Spain: Spanish Language and Culture Study"

May 31-July 7 2010

About
This program provides a six-week experience of immersion into the life of modern Spain. Classroom and local field activities will take place at the Universidad de Salamanca. The initial eight-day tour includes visits to other artistic and historically prominent cities. These cultural activities will provide intensive direct involvement in communicative situations for language acquisition and on-site learning about the diversity that makes up the rich multicultural Spanish legacy.  Nine hours of credit are available for three courses (language and culture) at the undergraduate level. Eligibility: Students must complete Spanish 4 (or equivalent) prior to enrollment, or should request permission of the faculty leaders.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive 3 undergraduate K-State credits and 6 transfer credits from the University of Salamanca.

"Mexico: Spanish Language Studies"

About
This faculty-led group study abroad program provides five weeks of language and cultural immersion in Guanajuato, Mexico, for all levels of students in Spanish. Nine hours of credit is available upon successful completion of the program (six hours of transfer credit from the University of Guanajuato and three hours from K-State). The courses promote rapid language acquisition and development of a broad cultural knowledge. Guanajuato, declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO, is situated in the highlands of Mexico’s colonial heartland. With a population of 155,000, this beautiful city is a blend of both the old and the new worlds. Students will visit places such as Cristo Rey, La Bufa, Museo de las Momias, Valenciana Mine, Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, and Teotihuacan.

Nine undergraduate credits are available (six transfer credit hours from Tecnologico of Monterrey and three hours from K-State). Credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the courses.

"France: Language and Culture Studies"

About
This program is designed for beginning, intermediate and advanced level students. Students will experience many of the cultural wonders of France by participating in various cultural activities and excursions. Students will live with French host families in an effort to maximize their language and cultural understanding.

This program will provide students with up to 8 academic credits: one French language course from the Catholic University of Paris (5 transfer credits) and a Cultural History of Paris course (3 KSU credits) taught by Dr. Clark for upper level students.

Study Tour in Indonesia: Bali, Flores, and Wallacea: An Evolutionary Oddity

About
Students will observe firsthand the gradual change in the distribution of flora and fauna in Indonesia. This study tour will include trips to multiple national parks, exploration of the natural history or the islands, and cultural tours. Students will visit various Indonesian islands on the Sundan and Sahhul shelfs.
