Course:Three credits of graduate level credit for EDCI 786: Topics in Education: London Writing Marathon
Description:This class is a unique opportunity to take the National Writing Project’s “Writing Marathon” model to the next level. Throughout the experience, students will have a series of structured writing prompts and sharing time. Additionally, as per the marathon model, students will be expected to explore their new surroundings in small groups, writing and sharing throughout the day. Several weeks after the group returns to Manhattan, students will present their final portfolios and share their experience with participants of the 2009 summer institute.
Eligibility:Minimum GPA 2.5 and instructor permission required.

Description: In the last few decades the Amazon region has attracted a lot of attention as it contains one of the last large rainforests in the world while at the same time being transformed by regional economic change. This geography-based social science study abroad program is about understanding how people live in the Brazilian Amazon region and will focus on reconciling regional economic development with environmental sustainability. Through service-learning, various field excursions, readings, lectures, and discussions students will consider how the need to provide livelihoods for local people can be met while at the same time protecting a global resource, the Amazon rainforest.

They will work to develop a practicum portfolio which will encompass all four areas studied: methods, assessment, linguistics, and multicultural curriculum and materials. Course:GRMN 525 (Special Studies in German)
Description: K-State in Liepzig is a five-week linguistic and cultural immersion course: intensive language instruction at the Herder Institute (Universität Leipzig) combined with a two-week, faculty-led tour of Saxony and Berlin, during which students will visit, experience, talk, and write about important German cultural and historical sites. Upon return to K-State (Fall 2009), students will share their experiences through presentations and discussions in lower-level German language classes.
Eligibility: Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.5. It is suggested that students have previously studied German, however it is not necessary. Students will be placed in language courses based on previous experience in German language.

Course: Geography 490: London: A Life in Maps and 3 credits for English 395: London Theatre and Stage
Description: This is a very special edition of Geography 490, which focuses on historical maps of London, on interdisciplinary topics, as well as on major districts and neighborhoods in London. Between the two Queen Elizabeth’s, from the 1550’s to the present, London became the world’s greatest imperial city. In this course we will trace London’s historical geography using a variety of maps and readings. We will visit some of the great London museums; walk London’s streets; and work through a series of field exercises.
To take advantage of the London venue, English 395 will use as primary texts the plays, movies, museums, and other cultural opportunities in London. Though the class will read plays and/or scripts ahead of time, primary emphasis will be on attending and then discussing and writing about the contemporary literary scene in London.
Eligibility: Students will have a minimum GPA of 2.2 to enroll. Instructor permission is required.

Description: This course is a study of wood as a building material in the United States and Sweden. Topics will include timber harvesting and production, wood products, structural design of members and connections and construction practices. Description:This program will provide an opportunity for students to study Japanese contemporary architecture in a very direct and tangible form. Students will participate in daily field trips and weekly seminar sessions involving relevant topics. The main program will be field studies of selected buildings and urban sites, with the first part based in Kyoto and the second part of the program based in Tokyo. Students will be given first‐hand experience with many important architectural urban phenomena throughout these two Japanese destinations.

Description: This program is a study of the natural history, ecology, and conservation of grassland and savanna ecosystems, with a focus on Africa. Topics include savanna/grassland origin and distribution, biodiversity, vegetation ecology, wildlife populations, plant-animal interactions, human0environment interactions, and current conservation issues including climate change, natural resource management, land use and cover change, fire ecology, wildlife conservation, invasive species, and sustainable use. The course will include introductory orientation sessions during the spring semester, 2 weeks of lecture, readings, and discussion on campus, and 3 weeks of travel and field study in Botswana and South Africa.

Course: GENAG 505: Agriculture in Costa Rica Study Tour
Description: This program is a 16-day intensive Animal Science study tour, which will focus on Costa Rican animal and agricultural crop production. There will be class meetings prior to the trip to acquaint students with the country, its production, and culture. The course will be conducted with cooperation from the Institute of Technology of Costa Rica (ITCR) in San Carlos, Costa Rica. The program will include a stay at ITCR and tours to animal, crop production, and biological station facilities in several regions. Costa Rican culture and the impact of agriculture in Costa Rica will also be studied.

Description: Seminars on Chinese culture, history, geography, economy, and politics will be given before the 17 day trip. Students will stay at Henan University of Technology in Zhengzhou, China for 7 days, attending classes and seminars on grain processing and utilization in China, and visiting grain related processing companies, elevators, and farms. Students will also meet Chinese professors and participate in various student exchange activities. The remaining time in China will be used for touring the capital city, Beijing, the historical cities, Lueyang and Kaifeng, and the largest and most modernized city, Shangahai.
Eligibility: Minimum 2.5 GPA
