MORTAR BOARD HOSTS SUCCESSFUL ACADEMIC DECATHLON STATE COMPETITION  

Fourteen high school teams made their way to the KSU campus in Manhattan on Jan 25-26 for two days of presenting speeches, being interviewed, writing essays, taking 7-50 minute tests, enjoying a pizza party and dance, competing against other teams in the oral super quiz on the Civil War and winding up the event with a great banquet and awards night where everyone went home a winner for all their hard work.

This year’s Banquet Speech Showcase featured excellent presentations by Scott Olinger, SMSouth; Michael Cooper, Bonner Springs; Varsha Subramanyam, SMS and Chad Bergman, Olathe NW.

Kevin Able, SMS; Michael Cooper, Bonner; Vicki Stanley, Washburn; Josh Madden, Olathe East; Catherine Barrett, SMNW were nominees for the $500.00 Outstanding Senior AcaDeca Scholarship and the award went to Tenille Hunter from Bishop Ward.

High point scholarships in the Varsity and Honors Division of $500.00 each were received by Scott Olinger and Katrina Kutchko both from SMS. With a total score of 7,637 points Kevin Able received the $1000.00 Scholarship awarded from the KAD Board and USAFunds to use at the college of his choice next year.

The Oral Super Quiz Competition in the afternoon was a close event. Winners receiving plaques for their teams were: First, SMSouth; Second, Blue Valley North; Third (tie) Independence and Olathe East
