SAFETY TIPS

It’s no secret: safety is everyone’s business

K-State students and staff members have worked together to organize escort services, improve lighting on major walkways, and develop other programs to keep our campus safe.

Everyone has a part to play. Even you.

Here are some tips on what you can do to protect yourself, protect others, and maintain the campus environment that makes K-State special.

Biking the globe

Where would you be without those wonderful wheels? Probably still on your way to class.

Here are some ways to protect your beloved bike and its equally beloved owner:

• Register your bike with Parking Services. It’s free—and you’ll get parking tickets if you don’t!
• Record the serial number of your bike.
• Never leave your bike unattended or unlocked.
• Use sturdy U-Locks or heavy, case-hardened chains to lock your bike.
• Lock your bike on a bike rack. Most stolen bikes were never even locked up!
• If you’re really concerned about theft, carry your front wheel with you after you park your bike. Who’d steal a one-wheeled bike?
• While you’re at it, take your accessories. Those gel pad seats are a hot commodity!
• Keep your bike locked in your room when you’re not riding it.
• Wear a helmet.
• Stay off the sidewalks. Use bike lanes instead.
• Be sure your bike has a front light and reflectors to meet the state law.

Using emergency phones on campus

Discount stores aren’t the only places to find great blue-light specials! Whenever you need help, just look for a blue light.

K-State’s emergency phones are located beneath blue lights in parking and walking areas all across campus. You can also use these boxes to ask for directions or to report a crime or accident. Here’s how they work:

• Push the button on the yellow box.
• Talk into the speaker
• You’ll automatically be in touch with the campus police.
