K-STATE WOMEN AND FRIENDS UNIVERSITY MEN CHAMPIONS IN
KSU/ ED CHARTRAND MEMORIAL SOCCER TOURNAMENT

(APRIL 20, 2008... MANHATTAN, KS ) The 29th Annual KSU-Ed Chartrand Soccer Tournament featured two cliffhanger finals both being decided by penalty kicks. In the women’s division, Kansas State University won out over the University of Kansas after concluding regulation play in a 1-1 tie. It was similar in the men’s championship with Friends University-Wichita coming out on top over the University of Kansas.

“K-State and KU are the perennial firestorms in this tournament, but Friends University of Wichita and Truman State made this tournament all the more exciting this year” said Dennis Cook, tournament director. “Kansas State alumni appeared in large numbers and added some real history to this great tradition. Not many events are still going strong after 29 years.”

The tournament is held annually in memory of Ed “Fast Eddy” Chartrand, a former K-State soccer player from Leawood, Kansas who died suddenly at the age of twenty-two. The KSU-Ed Chartrand Memorial Tournament and its scholarship program are primarily funded by the Chartrand Charitable Foundation and its private donors. During the tournament, Ed Chartrand’s brother, Art Chartrand and nephew, Alex Chartrand, presented scholarships to two Kansas State students. Chris Coffey, Leawood, KS, a graduate of Blue Valley West High School, who played soccer under coach Alex Aiman, received one of the scholarships. Coffey is currently a junior in business management information systems. The other recipient was Caitlin Admire of Evergreen, Colorado. Caitlen, a graduate of Evergreen Senior High, played soccer there for DJ Ruder. She is a landscape architecture major and plans to graduate with a masters degree in 2011.

“It is our hope and dream to broaden the opportunities for young soccer players, both men and women, to play quality soccer and be afforded scholarships to attend KSU and other major colleges, said Art Chartrand, president of the Chartrand Charitable Foundation.
