Approximately 500 young women answered the call in the Collegian newspaper to start a new sorority on K-State's campus in the fall of 1990, one week after the University's formal rush (now known as recruitment). This open rush, led by a team of ten women from Sigma Kappa National Headquarters, took place in the KSU Union 2nd floor ball rooms. One hundred and fifty one members pledged Sigma Kappa that fall. The first women to pledge Sigma Kappa at K-State held their weekly meetings in the Big 8 room (now known as the Big 12 room) at the KSU Union. Meetings consisted of both pledge classes and business sessions. Women learned about the history of the Sorority as well as Sigma Kappa songs during their pledge classes. The founding class of our Chapter consists of 120 women who were the first to be initiated into the Theta Tau Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority. These women had the ultimate responsibility of starting our Chapter from scratch. After going through rush in the fall of 1990, they were initiated on January 26, 1991, after which the chapter was awarded its charter, which hangs in the foyer of our chapter house. A composite picture of the founding class (also known as the alpha class) hangs on the wall above the baby grand piano in the formal living room of the chapter house. |

Without these women, Theta Tau Chapter would not exist, nor would we be the unique group of women we are today. Special thanks is extended to the members of the founding class, whose hard work and inspiration has made our Chapter a solid member of the Greek community at Kansas State University. Theta Tau's first formal recruitment experience was unique since our members did not have a chapter house out of which to recruit new members. Instead, the alpha class used the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house. Pledging and initiations took place at All Faiths/Danforth chapel on campus. Meetings held at the KSU Union and formal recruitment at the Lambda Chi Alpha house continued for the next couple of years until our chapter house was built in 1993. Since then, our Chapter's activities have taken place at our house, located at 1525 Denison Avenue. Today, our Chapter continues to be a success in the K-State Greek community. Special thanks go to Karlene Stander Koesterman, Brooke Simpson Pirlot, and Paula Templeton (alpha class) for their assistance in writing our Chapter's history. |
