New Flexibility Available for Verification Requirements
On April 24, the U.S. Department of Education provided updated guidance to the verification requirements by allowing new types of acceptable documentation. The updated guidance is an effort to alleviate the hardship of the unavailability of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).
New Acceptable Documentation
The new types of acceptable documentation should ease the burden of collecting specific documents directly from the IRS.
Tax Filers can submit signed 2015 federal tax returns
Kansas State University may now accept signed copies of the student and parent 2015 IRS Form 1040 or 1040A/EZ, including schedules C and F, if filed. Please also include copies of all W2s.
Verification of Non-filing Letter no longer required
Kansas State University is no longer required to collect documentation from the IRS verifying an individual did not file a 2015 tax return. However, if an individual did not file a 2015 tax return, they must still provide a signed statement certifying they did not file and were not required to file, in addition to copies of all W2s.
Flexibilities begin immediately
The new flexibilities begin immediately and apply to both the 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years. Students/parents who have already requested an IRS Tax Return Transcript or IRS Verification of Non-filing may still submit those documents to our office.
Students and families that need assistance with the verification process are encouraged to contact our office by calling 785-532-6420, e-mailing email@example.com or visiting us in 104 Fairchild Hall on the Manhattan campus.
