master promissory note

If you have accepted a Federal Direct Student Loan as part of your financial assistance awards, K-State’s Office of Student Financial Assistance will continue the loan process by submitting your accepted Federal Direct Student Loan to the Federal Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) system for origination. However, a valid Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) must also be on file with the COD before our office can make any Federal Direct Loan disbursements to you.

To remind you of this necessary step, our office will provide you with an e-mail notification at the time we originate your Federal Direct Loan. As with all of our e-mail communications, we will send this message to your K-State e-mail address.

Important: If you previously borrowed a Stafford loan through the Federal Family Education Loan Program at K-State, it is highly likely that you will need to complete a Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note for any new federally guaranteed student loans, since Federal Direct Loans cannot utilize the same MPN as Federal Family Education Loans. Federal Family Education Loans utilize a commercial lenders while Federal Direct Loans utilize the U.S. Department of Education as the lender.

After you have successfully completed your Federal Direct Loan MPN, any future Federal Direct Loan offers made by K-State’s Office of Student Financial Assistance that you choose to accept may be associated with your original, completed Federal Direct MPN for up to 10 years from the date your MPN was signed.
