What do applying for K-State scholarships, applying for federal financial aid, and filing your taxes have in common? All three "chores" have deadlines that are rapidly approaching.
Apply for Federal Finanial Aid by March 1
If you will be a continuing student for the upcoming 2012-13 academic year and you have not already completed the online 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid, FAFSA, please submit it by K-State's priority date of March 1, 2012. You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen to apply. Submitting your FAFSA by March 1 will maximize your financial aid options for the upcoming academic year. You can complete and submit your FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.gov
IMPORTANT for FAFSA Filers:
If you and, if applicable, your parent/spouse have already filed a federal tax return for calendar year 2011, our office highly encourages you to utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool found within the online FAFSA application. This tool is scheduled to become available within the 2012-13 FAFSA application early February 2012. Please be sure to carefully follow the instructions provided within the online FAFSA application to determine if you can utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Since the tax information retrieved directly from the IRS represents your official federal tax information, please do not make any changes to the retrieved information.
If you and, if applicable, your parent/spouse have not yet filed a federal tax return for calendar year 2011, our office encourages you to provide estimated federal tax information when you submit your on-line FAFSA so that you may still meet K-State's March 1 priority date. Please note, however, that approximately, two weeks after you and, if applicable, your parent/spouse have filed an electronic federal tax return you will need to log back in to your 2012-13 FAFSA and perform a 'correction' to your original data. This 'correction' will consist of utilizing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool within the online FAFSA application to replace your estimated tax information with your official tax information transferred directly from the IRS.
Exceptions to utilizing the IRS Data Retrieval Tool:
Only five circumstances have been identified by our offices that prevent the utilization of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool found within the on-line FAFSA application:
- Individuals who are not required to file a federal tax return
- Married individuals who are filing separately for 2011
- Married individuals who are filing as head of household for 2011
- Individuals who are filing either a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return for 2011
- Individuals who are filing an amended federal tax return for 2011
