options for degrees in Speech Communication. Please select your

SPEECH COMMUNICATION MAJOR (37 HOURS)
The speech
communication major, which encompasses both communication theory
and rhetorical arts, has two primary educational goals: (1) to
develop students' ability to communicate with others and (2)
to educate students to effectively evaluate the communication
of others.

SPEECH COMMUNICATION MINOR (18 HOURS)

Individual
advisors will help students select three courses at the 300 to
400 level to complement the major program of study. In addition,
a fourth course from the 500 level or above will be required.
SPEECH COMMUNICATION GRADUATE DEGREE
Students
become eligible for the Master of Arts in Rhetoric/Communication
upon recommendation of the graduate faculty and completion of the
following requirements:
SPCH 710, 720,
730, and one of the following: SPCH 733, 821, or 822 (12 credit
hours total).
An additional
18 credit hours in rhetoric/communication courses numbered at the
600 level or above, including six credit hours of SPCH 899 (for
students electing the thesis option); or an additional 20 credit
hours, including 2 credit hours of SPCH 899 (for students electing
the nonthesis (report option).
Submission of
an acceptable thesis or report.
Completion of
an oral examination which includes a defense of the thesis or report.
In consultation
with his or her advisor, a student may develop a minor emphasis
of up to 9 credit hours at the 500 level or above in academic areas
outside the rhetoric/communication program.
