ADMISSION
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
ASSISTANTSHIPS
Graduate students become eligible for a Master of Arts degree in
Rhetoric/ Communication by fulfilling the following requirements:
1.
SPCH 710, 720, 730 and one of the following: SPCH 733, 821 or 822.
(12 hours total)
2.
An additional 18 credit hours in rhetoric/communication courses
numbered at the 600 level or above, including six hours of SPCH
899 (for thesis option); or an additional 20 credit hours, including
2 credit hours of SPCH 899 (non-thesis option).
3.
With the approval of his or her advisor, the student may elect to
take up to six semester hours in allied studies in other departments.
Allied studies courses must be at the 500 level or above.
4.
A student, with the approval of his or her advisor, may elect to
earn a Master of Arts degree with or without writing a thesis according
to the following requirements:
A.
Degree with a thesis (option 1)
1.
The student must earn a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate
credit.
2. A thesis must be submitted and approved; six semester hours
can be applied to thesis research and writing. A thesis identifies
an original research problem, implements an appropriate methodology,
and reports and interprets its findings.
3. The student must pass an oral examination on the thesis.
B. Degree
without a thesis (option 2)
1.
The student must earn a minimum of 32 semester hours of graduate
credit.
2. A report must be submitted and approved; two semester hours
can be applied to report research and writing. A report is an
academic essay that reviews and analyzes research literature
within the discipline.
3. The student must pass an oral examination which includes
a defense of the report.
C.
Degree without a thesis (option 3)
1.
The student must earn a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate
credit.
2. In lieu of a thesis/report, the student may substitute a
published article-length paper in a refereed regional or national
disciplinary journal.
3. The student must pass an oral examination which includes
a defense of the publication.
5.
Progress through the program
Continuation in the program is contingent upon the student making
satisfactory progress towards the degree. Satisfactory progress
is defined as follows:
(1)
The student must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0
(on a 4.0 scale).
(2)
The student must earn a grade of B or better in all required courses.
A student who receives a grade below B in a required course must
retake the course as a condition for continuation in the program.
A student whose overall grade point average falls below 3.0 will
be placed on probationary status. Continuation in the program
will be contingent upon the student raising his or her grade point
average to the minimum (3.0) within one semester.
