Dance Concerts at K-State
K-State dance offers many performance opportunities including faculty concerts, student concerts, and community outreach and regional touring opportunities.
Faculty Concerts
K-State Dance presents two faculty concerts each academic year, WinterDance in the fall and SpringDance in the spring, both in different performance venues, offering dancers at K-State different performance opportunities, adding to a rounded experience.
WINTERDANCE is held in Nichols Theatre, a "thrust" theatre in Nichols Hall, where the dance program calls its home. Experiencing WinterDance in this intimate setting is a wonderful way to come inside form the cold and warm up to a dance performance. Typically held the first weekend in December, WinterDance runs Thursday through Saturday with a matinee on Saturday.
SPRINGDANCE is performed on a proscenium stage at McCain Auditorium, our local road house. Typically presented the first weekend in April, SpringDance has Friday and Saturday evening performances.
Musicals
Each fall semester, K-State Music and K-State Theatre and Dance present a musical theatre production, which features a live orchestra and choreography, another opportunity for KSU students to dance onstage. Musicals are presented in both Nichols Theatre and McCain Auditorium. The fall '10 musical, "Little Shop of Horrors" was choreographed by dance alum and KSU Guest Artist Saylor Burgess. KSU Dance students have participated in the KSU Musical as performers, choreography assistants, and dance captains.
Student Concerts
DANCE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT is an informal concert for all K-State student choreographers. There is no audition for this concert, only an application. Student Spotlight may include new student choreography, works in progress, experimental works, and works which did not get shown on a faculty concert. Submissions may include works choreographed in the style of Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Hip-Hop, and other traditional world dance forms. Choreographers setting more than one dance should use a separate application for each piece. Choreographers and dancers must be K-State students.
SENIOR CONCERTS take place in Nichols Theatre and the Purple Masque. Students may choose to produce a senior concert as one option to fulfill the Senior Project requirements for K-State Dance majors.
Run-out Performances/Community Outreach
K-State Dance is committed to sharing dance with the community and often does run out performances in the community and surrounding areas with the K-State Dance Ensemble, Tap Ensemble, and African Dance Troupe.
Off Campus Performances/Festivals
K-State Dance is committed to traveling to festivals off campus such as the regional festivals of the American College Dance Festival (ACDFA) and the Kansas Dance Festival.
