Karthala is an active shield volcano on Ngazidja (Grande Comore) that dominates the southern half of the island. It reaches a height of of 2361 meters (7746.06 feet) and the area of its summit caldera is 12 km² (4.6 mi²). The dimensions are  4 kilometers (2.48 miles) by 3 kilometers (1.86 miles).
