Program Requirements

Entrance requirements for Anthropology Majors

To be admitted as an anthropology major, a student must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 based on a minimum of 12 credit hours earned at K-State.

Requirements for the Anthropology Major

In addition to the general B.A. or B.S. requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences, anthropology majors take a minimum of 33 credit hours in anthropology as follows:

Introductions to the four subfields of anthropology: 12 Credit Hrs.

ANTH 200 or 204 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
ANTH 220 Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology
ANTH 260 Introduction to Archaeology
ANTH 280 Introduction to Physical Anthropology

Initiation to Anthropology (ANTH 301): 3  Credit Hrs.
Advanced anthropology electives: 18 Credit Hrs.

Five advanced electives (300-level or above) in at least three of the subfields (15 Hrs.)  At least nine of these hours must be at the 500 level or above.

AND

ANTH 602 Anthropological Theory (3 Credit Hrs.)

Students are strongly encouraged to include at least one methods course (e.g., ANTH 677 Digital Ethnography; ANTH 678 Archaeological Laboratory Methods; ANTH 679 Archaeological Field Methods; ANTH 694 & 695 Osteology and Laboratory in Osteology; ANTH 730 Archaeological Field School; ANTH 792 Field Methods in Linguistics)

In addition to the above, a minimum GPA of 2.5 must be earned in all anthropology courses.

Requirements for a Minor

A minor in anthropology is also available. Anthropology minors must take a minimum of 18 hours in anthropology as follows:

Any 3 of the introductory classes: 9 Credit Hrs.

ANTH 200 or 204 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
ANTH 220 Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology
ANTH 260 Introduction to Archeology
ANTH 280 Introduction to Physical Anthropology

Advanced anthropology courses: 9 Credit Hrs.

Three advanced anthropology electives (500 level or above) in at least two of the subfields.

In addition to the above, a minimum GPA of 2.5 must be earned in all anthropology courses.

Paperwork necessary for declaring and certifying completion of the minor must be completed within the program.  Students interested in pursuing a minor in anthropology must meet with Dr. Michael Wesch.

Many anthropology students prepare for the variety of occupations concerned with human relations by combining anthropological study with other training, frequently by majoring in two fields.  Each program of study is worked out individually by a student and his or her adviser(s).
