  Tone/Style

  • The paper is a balanced argument, with neither side “winning”

  •  The writing is clear, logical, and intelligent.  Care has been taken with word choice and sentence structure

  •  Language is formal and logical; paper avoids casual language

  Editing and Conventions

  • Fewer than two major errors per page

  • Content/heading/style/citations in proper MLA format

  • Punctuation used correctly to guide meaning

  Focus/Purpose

  • Paper has one coherent, controversial topic

  • Both character’s positions are explicitly laid out

  Organization

  • Paper follows the formula of introduction, (A claim, B rebuttal, B claim, A rebuttal)X3, and conclusion.

  • Citations are correct and easily found on an MLA-documented Works Cited page.

  Development

  •  Sources are credible and pertinent

  •  Sources are quoted from intelligently and correctly

  •  Each claim is supported by at least three well-developed reasons, with backing evidence to support each reason
