Recycled Chemical
Storeroom Inventory
In an effort to reduce the amount
of chemicals discarded on the K-State campus, the Department of
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) with the cooperation of
the Department of Chemistry has a Recycled Chemical Storeroom located
in the King Hall Annex. Each week, boxes of chemicals are turned over
to the EH&S for disposal from the many laboratories on campus. In
an effort to reclaim useful resources and save research dollars, a
large percentage of these chemicals are diverted from hazardous waste
storage to the Recycled Chemical Storeroom. These chemicals are still
very useful. In fact, some of the containers still have the original
manufacturer's seal. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these
chemicals, other than having been in someone else's laboratory.
Chemicals are received by the
EH&S are cataloged, visually inspected for contamination, and
placed in the Recycled Chemical Storeroom. Only chemicals that are in
the original container, with the original label, and original closure
are placed in the Recycled Chemical Storeroom.
You will notice that we have a
very large selection of dyes and stains available, as well as
corrosives, oxidizers, flammables and others. These chemicals are
available, free of charge, to any laboratory member who has a
legitimate use for them. Please see personnel in the Chemistry
Storeroom to gain entry to the Recycled Chemical Storeroom. You will be
asked to show your KSU ID. You do not need a departmental requisition.
(If you take any chemicals from the Recycled Chemical Storeroom, please
fill out the Recycled Chemicals Storeroom Sign-Out Sheet. This will
help us keep the inventory up to date.) If you are from outside Kansas
State University, you will need to contact EH&S prior to visiting
the Recycled Chemical Storeroom. Sorry, but we will not ship these
chemicals. Please, do not place chemicals in the Recycled Chemical
Storeroom, all materials must be processed through the EH&S.
As part of this service, if there
are chemicals that you use on a regular basis, we will collect them and
deliver them to your campus laboratory as they are received by us.
Please call or e-mail (safety@ksu.edu)
with your request.
