Hazardous Material Pickup
A pick up service is provided by the Department of Environmental
Health & Safety. Waste material should be placed into glass, metal,
or plastic containers and kept closed. Segregate waste by hazard
classes. Collect halogenated waste separate from nonhalogenated
waste.
Categories of waste picked up by the Department
of Environmental Health & Safety:
-
Flammable solids, liquids, and gases
-
-
-
-
Reactive materials such as peroxides, perchlorates,
alkyl-metal compounds and explosives require special handling.
Alert the pick up personnel to the nature of the reactivity.
-
Corrosives (organic and inorganic)
-
-
Used vacuum pump oil and other lubricating
oils
-
Rare metals and heavy metals including mercury
-
Batteries (however, sealed, non-leaking
batteries may be sent to the Department of Environmental Health
& Safety in the CAMPUS mail)
-
-
-
Don't save it up! Do NOT allow more
than one container of waste type to accumulate per lab.
Waste chemicals must be properly labeled, dated,
and sorted. Follow these rules for keeping waste chemicals:
-
Place a Hazardous Waste label on the container.
These are available from the Department of Environmental Health
& Safety.
-
Write the name of the chemical on the label.
The major components or hazardous chemicals should be listed.
-
Write the date on the label when waste is
first placed in the container.
-
Write the date on the label when the container
is full.
-
All containers must be kept closed except
when adding waste.
-
You may not store full containers in the laboratory
more than three days. Notify the Department of Environmental
Health & Safety by phone or email to request a pick up.
-
Box the containers for easy carrying. Label
the box "Environmental Health & Safety."
