Assistant Radiation Safety Officer


Kansas State University's Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking applicants for an Assitant Radiation Safety Officer. This position reports to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). The Assistant RSO assists with the day-to-day operation of the Radioactive Materials Program. Responsibilities include the dosimetry program, detector calibration program, routine surveys, inspections of university work areas, training, documentation, the computer management program "EH&S Assistant" and interaction with regulatory authorities. All staff members of EH&S also participate in emergency response at Kansas State University. This individual will also complete 40-hour HAZWOPER training and be considered part of the team. We are looking for someone with a BS in health physics, physics, nuclear engineering or a closely related field. An advanced degree is preferred. One year of experience and additional training in radiation safety is also preferred. Description of Job Responsibilities
  • Assist the RSO to maintain the State Type A specific broad scope license for use of radioactive materials at KSU. Prepare amendments and annual renewal of the broad scope license.
  • Responsible for the operation of the EH&S Assistant, a computerized management system. Maintain required records within this system including the list of authorized users, inventory of authorized uses, training of users, leak test results, inspection results, inventory of radioactive materials at KSU, etc.
  • Conduct quarterly inspections of controlled areas.
  • Maintain dosimetry program.
  • Conduct instrument calibration program.
  • Conduct the LASER Safety Program.
  • Participate in the emergency response team as needed for hazardous materials releases.
  • Other duties as assigned by the RSO or Director of EH&S.
