Hazardous Waste Technician
Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, is seeking a technician for the operation of its hazardous waste storage facility. This individual is also responsible for the management of hazardous waste, medical waste, and universal waste at the university. This includes hazardous materials shipping, hazmat release cleanup, radioactive materials work as well as knowledge of the regulations concerning these substances. A bachelorbs degree in the physical sciences required with a degree in chemistry preferred. Minimum of 1 year experience working with hazardous materials or hazardous waste operations preferred. HAZWOPER certification required within 6 months of employment, prior certification preferred. Must be physically able to wear a respirator and participate in any emergency response team. Valid Kansas driverbs license required. Qualifications
- Education Required: BS degree in physical sciences including or related to chemistry, geology, toxicology, engineering or agriculture. Prefer BS in chemistry.
- Experience Required: Minimum of one year experience in hazardous materials or hazardous waste operations.
- Other Requirements: Must have a valid Kansas drivers license. Must be physically able to wear a respirator and participate in any emergency response team.
- Preferred Qualifications: Certification in DOT hazardous materials transportation and current certification in 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
Description of Job Responsibilities.
- Direct hazardous waste management and universal waste recycling program including collecting, cataloging and segregating waste in accordance with EPA, KDHE and DOT regulations. This includes program development, training and supervision of student hazardous waste technicians (50%, essential).
- Direct medical services waste management program including collecting, packaging, storing and disposal in accordance with EPA, KDHE and vendor disposal specifications (15%, essential).
- Develop methodologies for and perform chemical analysis on unknown hazardous waste, chemical neutralization processes and other internal disposal processes (15%, marginal).
- Manage the emergency response team and provide emergency response to hazardous materials spills and releases. Work with the Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Emergency Management as necessary (10%, essential).
- Research and develop campus policies and methodologies relating to hazardous waste management, medical services waste management, universal waste management and transportation of hazardous materials (5%, marginal).
- Assist with pick up of radioactive waste as necessary (1%, marginal).
- Other duties as assigned by the Environmental Manager or the Director (4%, marginal).
