8-4 Kansas Crop Improvement Association (KCIA)

The Kansas Crop Improvement Association (KCIA) Research Support Committee is now seeking proposals for research projects from several agencies. Commitments to continuing projects will be given first consideration. Currently supported projects with additional years on original proposals need only write a letter specifying changes or to continue as is. Priorities adopted by the KCIA Board are: 1) improved variety development; 2) seed technology--testing, processing, etc.; 3) certified seed marketing research; 4) further priority will be given to proposals that are likely to result in early benefit to growers.

8-5 Risk Management Education (USDA)

The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) is soliciting proposals for projects in the following areas: 1) the delivery of risk management education programs to producers and related agribusiness operators in the U.S. agricultural sector; 2) the development of agricultural risk management educational curricula and materials; and 3) supporting research that leads to improved risk management strategies and decision aids for agricultural producers or that improves access to risk management information. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) invites small business firms to submit research proposals under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) has announced its Special Focus Competition: European Community/United States of America Joint Consortia for Cooperation in Higher Education and Vocational Education for FY 1998. The competition includes an invitational priority to encourage proposals designed to support the formation of educational consortia of institutions in the U.S. and the European Union to encourage cooperation in the coordination of curricula, the exchange of students and the opening of educational opportunities between the U.S. and the European Union. 8-10 FAR Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Guest Investigator (NASA)

 

NASA's Office of Space Science solicits basic research proposals for participation in the NASA program for space science observations and subsequent analysis of the resultant data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The primary goal of the FUSE mission is the investigation of the nature and physics of interstellar and intergalactic gas through the use of high-resolution absorption spectroscopy of the far untraviolet emission of distant sources. The FUSE Guest Investigator Program is intended to enhance the scientific return from the mission and to allow a larger part of the astronomical community to use FUSE to conduct independent investigations. 8-11 Enabling Technologies for Micro Adaptive Flow Control (DOD)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Tactical Technology Office solicits proposals for research, development and demonstration of Enabling Technologies for Micro Adaptive Flow Control (MAFC). MAFC is defined as the ability to control the behavior of large scale flow fields by exploiting natural flow response to small scale disturbances triggered by small scale actuators. MAFC combines innovative actuator technologies with active flow control strategies. The long term program goals are to: 1) develop and validate enabling MAFC technologies, and 2) integrate MAFC technologies into high pay-off, aero and hydro prototypical systems-level demonstrations. 8-13 Quantitative Methods to Map Genes for Complex Diseases (NIH)

 

The purpose of this request for applications (RFA) is to solicit applications for innovative research projects that will develop new quantitative methods for mapping sets of genes that influence susceptibility to complex human diseases. 8-14 Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases Resource Center (NIH)

The National Institutes of Health invites cooperative agreement applications to support research and education through a resource center for osteoporosis and related bone disorders in order to facilitate and enhance knowledge and understanding on the part of health professionals, patients, and the public through effective dissemination of information. Awardees will be expected to participate actively in carrying out a national bone diseases educational and information program whose objectives are to: document the barriers and test strategies to improve the appropriate identification, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis and related bone diseases; design, implement, and evaluate the bone diseases education and information program in several regions of the U.S.; organize working groups of medical experts and consumer representatives to review available data and prepare publications relevant to osteoporosis and related bone diseases education. 8-15 Criminal Justice Grants (KS)

The State of Kansas is receiving funds from the U.S. Department of Justice to be subgranted to Kansas criminal justice agencies to assist their efforts in combating illicit drug use and violent crime. Cities, counties, state agencies, nonprofit organizations and Native American tribes are eligible to receive grant funding. Program areas for which applicants can apply include prevention, law enforcement, treatment, criminal interdiction, and criminal justice information systems improvement.

8-17 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (DOC

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF), will provide an opportunity for the Physics Laboratory (PL) and the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory (MSEL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Science Foundation to join in partnership with American colleges and universities to encourage outstanding undergraduate students to pursue careers in science and engineering. The MSEL programs provides research opportunities in ceramics, solid state chemistry metallurgy, polymers, neutron condensed matter science, and materials reliability. The PL program exposes students to atomic, molecular, optical and radiation physicists and facilities. Two nominations per institution are accepted.
