The Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration is inviting applications for information infrastructure grants to increase access to education, cultural and training resources; reduce the cost, improve the quality, and/or increase the accessibility of health care and public health services; promote responsive public safety services; improve the effectiveness and efficiency of government services; and foster communication, resource-sharing, and economic development within communities, both rural and urban. Matching funds are required. TIIAP will not support single-organization projects. (FR 12/22/97)
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration announces the solicitation of proposals for participation in the Large-scale Biosphere-atmosphere experiment in Amazonia. This is an international research initiative, lead by Brazil, designed to create the new knowledge needed to understand the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functioning of Amazonia, as well as the impact of land use change on these functions, and the interactions between Amazonia and the earth system. Topics are: 1) global scale hydrometeorology, 2) continental and regional scale hydrometeorology, 3) mesoscale hydrometeorology, and 4) regional and continental scale surface hydrology. The National Council for Eurasian and East European Research invites proposals for its 1998 research program, consisting of research contracts for collaborative projects involving two or more U.S.-based postdoctoral scholars; and grants for postdoctoral research by an individual U.S.-based scholar. The Council funds high-quality research on Eastern Europe and the NIS, in the social sciences and humanities (including history, geography, demography and environmental studies). The program for 1998 focuses on research designed to contribute to an understanding of current developments, and analysis of their significance for the present and future.
The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Professional Development Program (NCR SARE PDP) is seeking proposals for professional development initiatives in sustainable agriculture. Projects should focus on professional development for Cooperative Extension Service (CES) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and other appropriate agency and private sector personnel within the region, in the concepts, systems and practices of sustainable agriculture. Projects can include educational activities that will take place on commercial farms; workshops; conferences, including use of satellite or other interactive TV technologies; development of materials and fact sheets, handbooks and manuals, videos, etc.; or innovative combinations of these or other activities. Projects having a scope beyond a single state are encouraged.
This program provides grants for preservice and inservice professional development for bilingual education teachers, administrators, pupil services personnel, and other educational personnel who are either involved in, or preparing to be involved in, the provision of educational services for children and youth of limited English proficiency. Eligible applicants include one or more institutions of higher education which have entered into consortia arrangements with local educational agencies or state educational agencies. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the National Institute of AGing (NIA) invite investigator-initiated research grant applications to develop therapies to achieve euglycemia in people with type I diabetes. These applications could include: islet and beta cell transplantation; engineering of regulated insulin secretion in non-beta cell surrogates; hematopoietic stem cell therapy for the induction of tolerance; or development of technologies to preserve beta cell function and stimulate beta cell regeneration. Particular emphasis should be placed on the development of clinically applicable technologies. This request for application (RFA) is intended to stimulate the application of advances in cell biology, bioengineering, immunology, molecular biology, gene therapy and transplantation to the development of safe and effective therapies to regulate glucose homeostasis in humans. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) invite investigator-initiated research grant applications to develop a glucose sensor or to create a closed-loop system for regulating blood glucose. This request for applications (RFA) is intended to stimulate the application of advances in chemistry, engineering, cell biology, biochemistry and endocrinology to the development of novel technologies (which may include a combination of cellular and mechanical approaches) to reliably and accurately measure glucose levels as part of a system to maintain euglycemia. This RFA allows for the submission of applications for two-year pilot and feasibility grants, regular research project grants, and interactive research project grants, which will support the efforts of several independent investigators working in a collaborative manner.
