ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS & PHYSICAL SCIENCES
42-2 Fundamental Physics in Microgravity: Research and Flight Experiment Opportunities (NASA)
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is interested in receiving proposals for flight experiments and for ground-based experimental and theoretical microgravity research. Specifically, proposals are being sought to provide fundamental understanding in the research areas of low temperature and condensed matter physics, laser cooling and atomic physics and gravitational and relativistic physics. NRA-96-HEDS-03
Deadline: Letters of Intent 01/27/97; Proposals 03/25/97
42-3 Geographic Data: Framework Demonstration Projects (USGS)
The U.S. Geological Survey is inviting optional preliminary applications for comment for the first phase of a two-phase program that will strengthen the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. Interested organizations requested an opportunity to provide comments and project summaries in advance; as a result, USGS is offering this first-phase, optional project summary and comment solicitation. The second phase will be the program announcement. Participation in the first phase is not required for applicants who wish to submit formal proposals when the announcement is made. (FR 11/26/96)
Deadline: 01/17/97
42-4 Ancient Martian Meteorite Research (NASA)
This NASA Research Announcement (NRA) is a special announcement for the NASA component of joint program with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study ancient Martian Meteorites. This announcement initiates the NASA part of the Ancient Martian Meteorite (AMM) program that is a cooperative program to stimulate research in response to the intriguing, but controversial, findings of possible life in ancient Martian meteorite ALH84001. Proposals to NASA are solicited for studies concerning ancient Martian meteorite research that repeat and expand on those already conducted on Martian meteorite ALH84001 as well as other relevant research. (NRA 96-OSS-14)
Deadline: Notice of Intent 12/16/96; Proposals 01/29/97
42-5 High-Energy Density and Laser-Matter Interaction Studies (DOE)
The Energy Department is inviting applications to conduct basic research in high-energy density and laser-matter interaction studies at the National Laser User's Facility at the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics. DOE is looking for experiments in inertial confinement fusion and related plasma physics, but also will consider applications that focus on spectroscopy of high ionized atoms, laboratory astrophysics, fundamental physics, materials science, biology and chemistry. Experiments should be designed for using the Omega Laser at the University of Rochester and develop diagnostic techniques suitable for the Omega system. (FR 11/26/96)

HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
42-6 Specialized Cooperative Centers Program in Reproduction Research (NIH)
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) through the Reproductive Sciences Branch (RSB) in the Center for Population Research (CPR) provides funding for a limited number of research centers in the reproductive sciences. These centers provide an arena for multidisciplinary interactions among basic and clinical scientists interested in establishing high quality research programs in the reproductive sciences. Applications for these centers are sought from investigators willing to participate with the NICHD under a cooperative agreement in a multicenter cooperative research program. HD-96-008 (NIHG 11/22/96)
Deadline: Letters of Intent 01/08/97; Applications 05/15/97
42-7 Microgravity Materials Sciences (NASA)
Proposals are being solicited to conduct scientific investigations in the discipline of microgravity materials science. These investigations may involve space experiments using new or existing research instruments, ground-based experiments, or theoretical research intended to support the study of materials science using microgravity. Flight experiments may be proposed that require the development of new instruments or use other instruments described in the solicitation. NRA-96-HEDS-02
Deadline: Letters of Intent 01/24/97; Proposals 03/11/97
42-8 Osteoporosis and Fractures in Men (NIH)
This initiative invites applications directed to the study of the basic biology, epidemiology, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related fractures in men. This program announcement is intended to address the under-representation of men in studies of osteoporosis. It has been estimated that 1/3 of hip fractures world wide are in men. Therefore hip fractures in men are an important and underscrutinized area of public health. With the decline in premature cardiovascular mortality in males, fractures later in life are becoming an increasingly important cause of morbidity and mortality in older men. PS-96-009 (NIHG 11/15/96)

42-9 Salvatori Fellowship Program (The Heritage Foundation)
Each year the Salvatori Center selects twenty young faculty and doctoral candidates in the social sciences and humanities to become Salvatori Fellows. the Salvatori Fellows will participate in the summer 1997 colloquium, which will take place at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. Each Salvatori Fellow will receive a $500 stipend, travel expenses, and a perdiem allowance as a participant in the colloquium. After the completion of their terms, Salvatori Fellows will continue their affiliation with The Heritage Foundation as members of a national network of scholars, colleagues in the ongoing work of reclaiming our educational institutions and enlivening the public discussion of American principles.
