33-1 Tides Foundation Grants (Tides Foundation)
The Tides Foundation generally funds in five program areas: environment and natural resources, international affairs, economic public policy and enterprise development, social justice and community affairs. The foundation aims to promote creative nonprofit programs and to manage philanthropic resources that are dedicated to social change. In 1995, community affairs received 30 percent of total funding; social justice programs, 26 percent; the environment and natural resources, 22 percent; international affairs, 15 percent; and the remaining 7 percent of funds supported economic public policy and enterprise development.
33-2 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities (NRC)
The National Research Council plans to award approximately 20 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities in a program designed to provide opportunities for continued education and experience in research for Native American Indians, Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Black/African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders (Micronesians or Polynesians), and Puerto Ricans. Awards will be made in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and life sciences, or for interdisciplinary programs composed of two or more eligible disciplines. Awards are not made in the professions such as medicine or law.
33-3 Kansas Corn, Grain Sorghum and Soybean Commissions Grants (Kansas Corn, Grain Sorghum and Soybean Commissions)
The Kansas Corn, Grain Sorghum and Soybean Commissions are soliciting research and education proposals for Animal/Human Nutrition Studies, Value-Added Projects, and Marketing Extension Programs. The Corn Commission solicits grants for Breeding/Production/Environmental Programs. The Grain Sorghum Commission is soliciting proposals for Breeding/Genetics/Physiology/Environmental Programs. The Soybean Commission is soliciting proposals for Breeding/Product/Environmental Programs. Please submit all proposals to ESARP. Proposals may be 5 pages plus the cover page. An individual may be listed as the first principal investigator on only one proposal.

33-4 International Postdoctoral Fellowships (ACLS)
This competition will provide approximately 15 postdoctoral fellowships of $20,000 each to support scholars doing humanistic research on the societies and cultures of Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa. The fundamental criteria for selection of awards will be the intellectual value of the proposed research and the likelihood that the research will produce significant and innovative scholarship on foreign societies, scholarship which makes important theoretical or substantive contributions to particular disciplines, or to multidisciplinary or comparative research. These fellowships are intended as salary replacement, although travel funds may also be requested, to help scholars devote six to twelve continuous months to full-time research and writing.
33-5 Personnel and Parent Training and Information (ED)
The Education Department is inviting applications to increase the quantity and quality of personnel available to serve children with disabilities and enable parents to work more with professionals in meeting the needs of children with disabilities. Parent training and information centers should help parents better understand the nature and needs of their children; provide follow-up support for education programs; communicate better with special and regular educators and other relevant personnel; participate fully in education decisionmaking processes; obtain information about the range of options, programs, services and resources available at the local, regional and state level; and understand provisions for educating children under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. 33-6 Alternatives to Results Assessment for Children with Disabilities (ED)
The Education Department is inviting grant applications to pursue systematic programs of applied research focusing on one or more issues related to assessment, results-based accountability, or both for students with disabilities. Projects can test accommodations and adaptations; compare alternative and conventional assessments; investigate assessment development, such as the possibility of including students with disabilities in general assessments; system development, including accountability; and basic concepts that can be revised to reflect new assessment approaches. Applications should propose dissemination strategies for future education projects and research. (FR 08/29/96)
33-7 Children and Youths with Serious Emotional Disturbance (ED)
The Education Department is inviting applications to improve special education and related services to children and youths with serious emotional disturbance (SED). Projects should develop, implement, test and disseminate practices for improving academic, vocational, personal and social results for students with SED in regular high schools, including considering the most appropriate and least restrictive placement for such students. Activities may include developing practices with sound conceptual bases designed to improve outcomes for SED students; applying rigorous research standards in testing the efficacy of practices developed; and developing products that include clear, comprehensive descriptions of tested practices, test site contexts and target student characteristics; and disseminating such products to research institutes, clearinghouses and technical assistance providers. 33-8 Field-Initiated Research in Education of Individuals with Disabilities (ED)
The Education Department is inviting applications for field-initiated Research grants to improve the knowledge and practice of professionals, parents and others providing early intervention, special education and related services for individuals with disabilities. Projects may include short-term pilot studies and descriptive studies; conducting research on dissemination and use; employing new methodologies; advancing assessment; synthesizing state-of-the-art research and practice; and analyzing extant databases. 33-9 Spencer Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program (NAE)
The National Academy of Education Spencer Post-Doctoral Fellowships are designed to promote scholarship in the United States and abroad on matters relevant to the improvement of education in all its forms. Applications from persons in education, the humanities, or the social and behavioral sciences will be accepted; they must describe research relevant to education. Applicants must have had their PhD or EdD conferred between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 1996.

33-10 Training Land Management Demonstration (CTC)
Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) operates the National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence for the Department of Defence. CTC is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit a proposal to develop, demonstrate and evaluate advanced processes and technologies for land management; develop video-based training courses to fulfill needs for conservation-related training; assess the means of establishing an Army Lessons Learned Center to facilitate technology transfer; and capitalize on collaborative work in industry and academic institutions.
33-11 PKRZ Advanced Radar Technology (AFR)
Rome Laboratory is soliciting white papers for innovative approaches in the area of advanced technology that will overcome deficiencies in existing and planned radar systems to detect, track, and identify small signal targets operating in a high clutter and electronic countermeasure environment. Areas of interest include new system architectures, hardware and/or algorithm improvements, survivability, dual use, positional estimation improvements, unique concepts in radar system design and theater missile defense.

33-12 North American Wild Sheep Grants (Foundation for North American Wild Sheep)
The Foundation for North American Wild Sheep is composed of more than 5500 hunter-conservationists dedicated to the conservation, propagation, and intensive management of the wild sheep populations and their habitats in North America. Founded in 1978, the Foundation operates as a 501(c) (3), nonprofit corporation, and since the grant program began has funded over nine million dollars to a wide spectrum of research, translocation, education, habitat improvement and acquisition projects and sportsman's rights.
33-13 Mitochondrial DNA Mutations in Heart, Lung and Blood Diseases (NIH)
This initiative will foster research on molecular, cellular, genetic, and epidemiologic approaches to elucidate the role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in heart, blood vessels, blood and lung diseases. Its goals are to define mechanisms by which mtDNA mutations cause tissue-specific, progressive diseases, and to elucidate the cause and effect relationships between alterations in this genome and pathological phenotypes. The ultimate purpose of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematologic disorders due to mitochondrial DNA mutations in humans. HL-96-013 (NIHG 08/02/96)

33-14 Mechanisms of AIDS Pathogenesis (NIH)
This program announcement is intended to foster applications focusing on an hypothesis for AIDS-related pathogenesis applying state-of-the -art methods and approaches to in vivo research. In vivo research includes studies of human clinical or epidemiologic cohorts, animal models, or appropriate specimens from humans or animals. where scientifically justified, applicants are encouraged to include both human and animal studies. While the research necessary to test a proposed pathogenesis hypothesis may be possible within a single laboratory, some applications may require separate components at the same or different institutions specializing in different scientific disciplines (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, cellular biology, cellular immunology, pathology, genetics and biophysics). 33-15 International Peace Program (USIP)
The U.S. Institute of Peace is inviting applications under its 1997 topics, which include post-settlement peace-building, negotiation, mediation and diplomacy, regional security issues and conflicts and cross-cultural negotiation country studies. (FR 09/03/96)
The Project on Cities and Urban Knowledges is inviting applications for a variety of residential fellowships, ranging from a few weeks to one year. Visiting Scholars are the most flexible opportunities, but one or two semesters are also available. The International Center for Advanced Studies is a research center that brings together an international community of scholars, presently focused on the comparative and global study of cities. the Project on Cities and Urban Knowledges seeks to explore urban experience and understanding (disciplinary and popular) in an international and comparative context. For 1997-98, the focus will be Divided Cities. Subsequent years will focus on Cities and Nations, Political Obligation, and Metropolitan Life and Popular Culture.
33-17 Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowships (Spencer Foundation)
The Spencer Foundation offers dissertation fellowships of $17,000 for one year to support doctoral candidates in a variety of fields whose dissertations promise to contribute fresh perspectives to the history, theory or practice of formal or informal education. Application forms must be requested by applicants by 10/11/96. There are no citizenship restrictions.
33-18 Integrated Manufacturing Predoctoral Fellowships (DOE)
12 Fellowships will be awarded for three years of full-time study toward the PhD in an area related to integrated systems of manufacturing, including but not limited to, large scale systems and integration of product design with manufacturing processes. Fellowship awards provide an annual stipend of $20,000 and a cost-of-education allowance of up to $15,000. Applicants must possess a master's degree by the beginning of the fall 1997 term, or have been admitted to a doctoral program prior to the fall 1997 term, or have professional industrial experience equivalent to a master's degree.
