26-1 Interdisciplinary Research in Hazards and Disasters (Hazards SEES) (NSF)

Hazards SEES is a program involving multiple NSF Directorates and Offices that seeks to: 1) advance understanding of the fundamental processes associated with specific natural hazards and technological hazards linked to natural phenomena, and their interactions; 2) better understand the causes, interdependences, impacts, and cumulative effects of these hazards on individuals, the natural and built environment, and society as a whole; and 3) improve capabilities for forecasting or predicting hazards, mitigating their effects, and enhancing the capacity to respond to and recover from resultant disasters. 26-2 Military Families Learning Network (USDA)

The Military Families Learning Network (MFLN) Competitive Grant Program will develop an efficient and effective platform to 1) accomplish workforce development including professional development and 2) build capacity at the local level to meet the needs of military families and the individuals who serve them. USDA NIFA and the OSD seek to implement a high-quality learning platform that engages military family support professionals by connecting them to research and educational programming in order to identify and make use of research-and evidence-based information, educational and curriculum materials, and programming activities and efforts of the highest quality. 26-3 Air Pollution Monitoring for Communities (EPA)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing research on empowering communities and individuals to take action to avoid air pollution exposure, using low-cost portable air pollution sensors. Specifically of interest is research on using low-cost portable sensors to understand and avoid air pollution exposure, on the ways communities and individuals interact with air pollution sensors and their data, on methods for understanding and managing the quality of data from air pollution sensors, and on how sensors and sensor networks compare to existing state-of-the-art air quality monitoring methods. One of ACE's research goals is to assess human and ecosystem exposures and effects caused by air pollutants and climate change. ACE research also wants to provide data and tools that can help prevent and reduce air pollutant emissions in ways that are sustainable, innovative and cost effective.

26-4 Enduring Questions (NEH)

The NEH Enduring Questions grant program supports faculty members in the preparation of a new course on a fundamental concern of human life as addressed by the humanities. This question-driven course would encourage undergraduates and teachers to join together in a deep and sustained program of reading in order to encounter influential ideas, works, and thinkers over the centuries. What is an enduring question? The following list is neither prescriptive nor exhaustive but serves to illustrate. Are there universals in human nature? What is the source of moral authority? What is evil? Can war be just? How do we differ from other animals? Is peace possible? What is worth dying for? What is the value of education? Can greed be good? What is good government? 26-5 Mid-Career Professionals in Preservation and Related Fields (JMFCF)

The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation provides mid-career grants to professionals working in the fields of historic preservation, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, decorative arts, architectural design, and architectural history. Fitch Mid-Career grants are awarded annually to one or two mid-career professionals with at least ten years of experience as well as an academic background, professional experience, and an established identity in one or more of the eligible fields. The foundation will consider proposals for research and/or execution of a preservation-related project in any of the eligible fields. Grants are awarded only to individuals. The foundation does not fund university-sponsored research projects or dissertation research. (PND 5/16/2014)

The Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program awards relatively small grants to support the planning stages of innovative projects that promise to benefit the humanities. 26-7 Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MSPRF) (NSF)

The purpose of the Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MSPRF) is to support future leaders in mathematics and statistics by facilitating their participation in postdoctoral research environments that will have maximal impact on their future scientific development. There are two options for awardees: Research Fellowship and Research Instructorship. Awards will support research in areas of mathematics and statistics, including applications to other disciplines. 26-9 Advancing Research in Voice Disorders (R21) (HHS)

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) uses the Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award (R21) to support the development of novel ideas, technologies, or methodologies at an early stage of development which have the potential to break new ground or extend toward new directions or applications. This FOA invites R21 grant applications focused on advancing our scientific knowledge of the human larynx and human voice production in health and disease and optimal ways to prevent, evaluate, diagnose and clinically manage voice disorders. 26-10 DoD Autism Idea Development Award (DoD)

The ARP Idea Development Award supports the development of innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress in improving outcomes for individuals with autism. This award mechanism is designed to support innovative ideas with the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. 26-11 Saudi American Educational and Cultural Initiative Grant (DoS)

Saudi-American Educational and Cultural Initiative Grants support innovative forms of collaboration between Saudi and U.S. non-governmental and community organizations, universities, entrepreneurs, cultural organizations and qualified individuals to expand the diversity of activities in the U.S.-Saudi partnership and develop the next generation of leaders, especially among youth, young professionals and women, to promote mutual understanding and respect through long-term partnership and cooperation between our two countries. The Embassy is especially interested in identifying and supporting U.S-Saudi partnerships that include a focus on the development of exchanges, projects and partnerships between U.S. and Saudi youth or women; or that involve the development of professional linkages in business, healthcare or media, including social media; or that build on Saudi efforts to modernize and build a knowledge-based economy; or that expand Saudi-U.S. educational partnerships; or that are submitted by or involve alumni of exchange programs sponsored by the U.S. or Saudi governments. 26-12 Science of Science and Innovation Policy (NSF)

The Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program supports research designed to advance the scientific basis of science and innovation policy. Research funded by the program thus develops, improves and expands models, analytical tools, data and metrics that can be applied in the science policy decision making process. For example, research proposals may develop behavioral and analytical conceptualizations, frameworks or models that have applications across a broad array of SciSIP challenges, including the relationship between broader participation and innovation or creativity. Proposals may also develop methodologies to analyze science and technology data, and to convey the information to a variety of audiences. Researchers are also encouraged to create or improve science and engineering data, metrics and indicators reflecting current discovery, particularly proposals that demonstrate the viability of collecting and analyzing data on knowledge generation and innovation in organizations. 26-13 Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL) (NSF)

This funding partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Made urgent by the imminent death of roughly half of the approximately 7000 currently used languages, this effort aims to exploit advances in information technology to build computational infrastructure for endangered language research. The program supports projects that contribute to data management and archiving, and to the development of the next generation of researchers. Funding can support fieldwork and other activities relevant to the digital recording, documenting, and archiving of endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. Funding will be available in the form of one- to three-year senior research grants as well as fellowships for up to twelve months and doctoral dissertation research improvement grants for up to 24 months.
