16-1 FY14 MASINT Emerging Technologies Research (DoD)

Measurement and Signature Intelligence (MASINT) is an intelligence discipline that employs a broad range of scientific developments to gather foreign intelligence. In our efforts to enhance this intelligence competency we are interested in stimulating and supporting research that creates new knowledge and capabilities, or the transition of current capabilities, that have the potential to enhance the following areas: Remote assessment and detection of weapons of mass destruction, specifically nuclear and radiological weapons, as well as chemical and biological weapons. Remote assessment designed as weapons as well as high-powered microwave (HPM) and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons. Bioinformatics, the science of collecting and analyzing complex biological data such as genetic codes, has become an important part of many areas of biology. Research should focus on how this science promotes the extraction of useful results from large amounts of raw data as well as how its intrinsic characteristics are applicable to many related research topics. Telematics typically is any integrated use of telecommunications and informatics, also known as ICT (Information and Communications Technology). Possible telematics applications can track vehicles, trailers, and shipping containers. Telematics is also used for relaying environmental conditions within vehicles, trailers or shipping containers, fleet management, mobile data and mobile television, wireless vehicle safety communications allowing vehicles to communicate with those around it and emergency warning system for vehicles. 16-2 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grant (Parent T32) (NIH)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda. Research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development components to prepare individuals for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. Programs proposing only short-term research training should not apply to this announcement, but rather to the Kirschstein-NRSA Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant Program (T35) exclusively reserved for predoctoral, short-term research training (see PA-14-016). 16-3 Decision Frameworks for Multi-Hazard Resilient and Sustainable Buildings (RSB)(NSF)

The goal of the Decision Frameworks for Multi-Hazard Resilient and Sustainable Buildings (RSB) solicitation is to advance knowledge for new concepts for multi-hazard resilient and sustainable SFSE building systems using decision frameworks for selection among alternative building system designs. Research for multi-hazard resilient and sustainable SFSE building systems supported under the this solicitation must include the consideration of a rational decision framework, preferences, concepts for SFSE systems, and design optimization methods for generating and choosing among alternative SFSE systems. Multidisciplinary collaborations are essential for this research. Proposals must broadly integrate across the fields of architecture; engineering; material, environmental, social, behavioral, and economic sciences; and other disciplines necessary to address the research scope. Research supported under this solicitation may include computational, analytical, and/or experimental work. Research may also undertake the collection of new data or the use of existing data, but the data must be integral to the decision framework. NSF 14-557

16-4 Research Grant and Cooperative Agreement Program (NRC)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulates the nation's civilian use of by-product, source, and special nuclear materials to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. The NRC's Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) furthers the agency's regulatory mission by providing technical advice, technical tools and information for identifying and resolving safety issues, making regulatory decisions, and promulgating regulations and guidance. RES awards support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by named Principal Investigators (PIs) in areas representing the investigators' specific interests and competencies, based on the mission of the NRC to conduct independent research and analyses, develop technical bases for supporting realistic safety decisions, and evaluate safety issues involving current and new designs and technologies related to nuclear power and materials. Areas of interest include, seismic and tsunami research, degradation of reactor component materials; integrity of reactor component and structures; uncertainty characterization and quantification of models and parameters used in reactor component integrity assessments; aging and durability of concrete, steel and composite structures; structural integrity of nuclear power plants structures; technical basis for issues affecting voluntary consensus standards; severe accident research (particularly analyses with MELCOR and MACCS); thermal-hydraulics research; nuclear fuel performance research; research to analyze post-accident equipment response and recovery; long term behavior of spent fuel storage and disposal systems; probabilistic risk assessment; human reliability analysis; human factors in advanced automation and/or digital instrumentation and control; fire safety research; or any other area relevant to the mission of the NRC will be accepted. 16-5 Research Conference Grant and Cooperative Agreement (NRC)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) furthers the agency's regulatory mission by providing technical advice, technical tools and information for identifying and resolving safety issues, making regulatory decisions, and promulgating regulations and guidance. RES will consider applications that support conferences/scientific meetings that are relevant to the mission of the NRC. A conference/scientific meeting is defined as an open gathering, symposium, seminar, workshop or any other organized, formal meeting where persons assemble to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information and/or explore or clarify a defined subject, problem, or area of knowledge. 16-7 Global Research Outreach (GRO) (Samsung)

The GRO Program is SAMSUNG's (Samsung Electronics & affiliated Samsung companies) academic research collaboration platform. We annually invite world-class university researchers to submit innovative research proposals to foster collaborative relationships. 2014 GRO Program is seeking proposals from (12) research themes. Under the research themes, there are forty (40) special subjects this year. Each special subject has detailed Call for Proposal on the GRO homepage. We actively seek collaboration on the special subjects, but we welcome other subject submissions because innovation has no boundaries. This Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Material Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The FY14 PRCRP Topic Areas are: blood cancers; cancers related to radiation exposure (New for FY14); Colorectal cancer; genetic cancer research; kidney cancer; listeria vaccine for cancer; melanoma and other skin cancers; mesothelioma; myeloproliferative disorders (New for FY14); Neuroblastoma; Pancreatic cancer; and Pediatric brain tumors.

16-9 Rural Health and Safety Education (USDA)

Many individuals and families living in rural areas and communities experience disparities related to health and well-being. Negative health behaviors and familial, occupational, and environmental risk factors underlie such chronic health conditions as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, agricultural respiratory diseases, traumatic brain injury, and vision/hearing impairment. In addition, the opportunity to receive health information, or engage in health promotion activities is often limited and, when available, may not be appropriate for the diverse populations living in rural areas. Effective programs and services in the human sciences are needed to promote rural health and vitality by providing timely and adequate health information and promotion opportunities to rural residents of all ages, with consideration for health and life stage, healthy living behaviors, health literacy, health access and social opportunities for individuals and families to engage in promotion of their own health and the health of others. Health promotion and education in areas such as nutrition and physical activity, healthy and safe homes, and overall human health and well-being are fundamental components of such programs and services. 16-10 Healthy Habits: Timing for Developing Sustainable Healthy Behaviors in Children and Adolescents (R01) (NIH)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to encourage applications that employ innovative research to identify mechanisms of influence and/or promote positive sustainable health behavior(s) in children and youth (birth to age 21). Applications should target social and cultural factors, including, but not limited to: schools, families, communities, population, food industry, age-appropriate learning tools and games, social media, social networking, technology and mass media. Topics to be addressed in this announcement include: effective, sustainable processes for influencing young people to make healthy behavior choices; identification of the appropriate stage of influence for learning sustainable lifelong health behaviors; the role of technology and new media in promoting healthy behavior; identification of factors that support healthy behavior development in vulnerable populations, identification of barriers to healthy behaviors; and, identification of mechanisms and mediators that are common to the development of a range of habitual health behaviors.
