14-5 Reducing Health Disparities Among Minority and Underserved Children (R01) (NIH)

This initiative encourages research that targets the reduction of health disparities among children. Specific targeted areas of research include biobehavioral studies that incorporate multiple factors that influence child health disparities such as biological (e.g., genetics, cellular, organ systems), lifestyle factors, environmental (e.g., physical and family environments) social (e.g., peers), economic, institutional, and cultural and family influences; studies that target the specific health promotion needs of children with a known health condition and/or disability; and studies that test and evaluate the comparative effectiveness of health promotion interventions conducted in traditional and nontraditional settings. 14-6 Funding to Train and Educate Next Generation of Farmers and Ranchers (USDA)

The Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP) is an education, training, technical assistance and outreach program designed to help farmers, ranchers and managers of non-industrial private forest land--specifically those aiming to start farming and those who have been farming or ranching for 10 or fewer years. It is managed by the National Institutes of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). NIFA will competitively award grants to organizations conducting programs to help beginning farmers and ranchers. Priority will be given to projects that are partnerships and collaborations led by or including non-governmental, community-based, or school-based agricultural educational organizations.

14-7 Supplemental and Alternative Crops Competitive Grants Program (USDA)

NIFA requests applications for the Supplemental and Alternative Crops Competitive Grants Program (SACC) for fiscal year (FY) 2014 to significantly increase crop production and/or acreage by developing and testing superior germplasm, improving methods of planting, cultivation, and harvesting, and transferring new knowledge to producers (via Extension) as soon as practicable. Among supplemental and alternative crops, the United States does not produce enough canola to meet its consumption needs. Knowledge and germplasm gaps must be filled, including: 1) adaptation of varieties of canola to address emerging issues of importance to U.S. agriculture; 2) establishment and extension of various methods of planting, cultivating, harvesting, and processing canola; and 3) transfer of such applied research to on-farm practice as soon as practicable. In FY 2014, the SACC program will support the development of canola as a viable supplemental and alternative crop in the United States. Proposals submitted to this program should be comprehensive and integrated in nature. Priority will be given to applications that provide evidence of multi-state cooperation and will use the expertise and resources of other Federal agencies and land grant colleges and universities. 14-8 Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) (NSF)

The Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program seeks to advance new approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and development of STEM learning in informal environments; provide multiple pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning experiences; advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning in informal environments; and develop understandings of deeper learning by participants. The AISL program supports six types of projects: 1) Pathways, 2) Research in Service to Practice, 3) Innovations in Development, 4) Broad Implementation, 5) Conferences, Symposia, and Workshops, and 6) Science Learning+ Proposals. ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS & PHYSICAL SCIENCES

14-9 GeoPrisms Program (NSF)

GeoPRISMS (Geodynamic Processes at Rifting and Subducting Margins) is the successor to the MARGINS Program. GeoPRISMS will investigate the coupled geodynamics, earth surface processes, and climate interactions that build and modify continental margins over a wide range of timescales. These interactions cross the shoreline and have applications to margin evolution and dynamics, construction of stratigraphic architecture, accumulation of economic resources, and associated geologic hazards and environmental management. 14-10 Navy and Marine Corps Science, Technology, Engineering (DoD)

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) seeks proposals for developing innovative solutions that directly support the development and maintenance of a robust Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. The goal of any proposed effort should be to provide game changing solutions that will establish and maintain a diverse pipeline of U.S. citizens who are interested in uniformed or civilian Naval STEM related workforce opportunities. While this announcement is relevant for any stage of the STEM pipeline, for FY14, funding efforts will be targeted primarily towards High School, Undergraduate, and Graduate STEM education and outreach designed to enhance the Navy and Marine Corps STEM workforce and its mission readiness. Currently, we are especially interested in efforts related to developing information technology/ computer science/ cyber security expertise, strengthening the engineering disciplines across all Naval activities, as well as improving our technician pipeline. 14-11 International Research Network Connections (IRNC) (NSF)

The International Research Network Connections (IRNC) program supports high performance network connectivity required by international science and engineering research and education collaborations involving the NSF research community. NSF expects to make a set of awards to: 1) link U.S. research networks with peer networks in other parts of the world and leverage existing international network connectivity; 2) support U.S. infrastructure and innovation of open network exchange points; 3) drive innovation and state-of-the-art capabilities for Research and Education (R&E) Network Operation Centers (NOC); 4) stimulate the development, application and use of advanced network measurement capabilities and services across international network paths; and 5) support community engagement in training and human and network capacity building, and coordination in advanced network engineering. 14-12 Social Science Research on Implementation, Dissemination, and Translation FY 2014 (DOJ)

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for funding for FY 2014 Social Science Research on Implementation, Dissemination, and Translation. This program furthers the Department's mission by sponsoring research to provide objective, independent, evidence - based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the State and local levels. NIJ proposes two distinct research activities under this solicitation. Applicants may apply to one or both sections of the solicitation; however, proposal titles should clearly identify the section of the solicitation for which the proposal is being submitted: Incorporating the Use of Research in Policy Decisions; and Translational Criminology Research Fellowship. 14-13 Fellowships for University-Based Doctoral Candidates and Faculty for Research in Child Maltreatment (ACF)

This 24-month fellowship program is designed to identify, develop, and empower a new generation of scholars who will use their research to generate new knowledge in child maltreatment and will pursue careers in child abuse and neglect research and evaluation. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will provide support for doctoral candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to the study of child maltreatment, and faculty who will conduct research on critical issues in child abuse prevention and treatment and provide mentorship to the emerging scholars. The Children's Bureau will award fellowships to applicants that utilize multi-method research designs for: economic evaluations of interventions to improve outcomes of children and families in or at risk of entering the child welfare system; studies that examine the relationship between neglect and poverty; studies that examine resiliency and protective factors for children experiencing or at-risk of child maltreatment; and secondary research on existing datasets. Doctoral candidates concentrating on child maltreatment issues in the fields of social work, social science, public health, medicine, and economics are the target of this support.
