The Burroughs Wellcome Fund's Career Awards at the Scientific Interface provide $500,000 to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first years of faculty service. Awards are intended to foster the early career development of researchers with backgrounds in the physical/mathematical/computational sciences and engineers whose work addresses biological questions. These awards are open to U.S. and Canadian citizens or permanent residents as well as to U.S. temporary residents.
In December 2011, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) with the cooperation of NSF issued a broad, coordinated federal strategic plan for cybersecurity research and development to change the game, minimize the misuses of cyber technology, bolster education and training in cybersecurity, establish a science of cybersecurity, and transition promising cybersecurity research into practice. This challenge requires a dedicated approach to research, development, and education that leverages the disciplines of mathematics and statistics, the social sciences, and engineering together with the computing, communications and information sciences. The Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program welcomes proposals that address Cybersecurity from a Trustworthy Computing Systems (TWC) perspective and/or a Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) perspective. In addition, they welcome proposals that integrate research addressing both of these perspectives as well as proposals focusing entirely on Cybersecurity Education. Proposals may be submitted in one of the following three categories: Small projects: up to $500,000 in total budget, with durations of up to three years; Medium projects: $500,001 to $1,200,000 in total budget, with durations of up to four years; Frontier projects: $1,200,001 to $10,000,000 in total budget, with durations of up to five years. In addition, the SaTC program seeks proposals addressing Cybersecurity Education with total budgets limited to $300,000 and durations of up to two years. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) encourages innovative applications for the development of new or improved instrumentation for biomedical research. For the 29th time the German Agricultural Society (DLG) is awarding the International DLG Prize in 2014. This prize, one of the most important promotion programmes for junior staff and new recruits in Germany has already been awarded to 236 honorees from 22 different countries. They are looking for young people who are professionally active or want to be active in agriculture and food industry and who are characterized by technical skills, voluntary engagement and sociability. The scholarships associated with the prize are there to support the honorees in the process of expanding their professional knowledge and skills and furthermore to qualify in their occupational field. In addition, they want to give young people access to the DLG and their professional work. They would like to invite you to nominate suitable candidates for this award.
CISE's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) supports research and education projects that develop new knowledge in three core programs: The Cyber-Human Systems (CHS) program; The Information Integration and Informatics (III) program; and The Robust Intelligence (RI) program. IIS is also responsible for managing the review process for proposals in Computer Graphics and Visualization; these proposals may be submitted to any of the three core programs described above. This NRA solicits research proposals from Principal Investigators from U.S. institutions to participate in NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) facility on the International Space Station (ISS). CAL is a multi-user facility designed to study ultra-cold atoms and degenerate quantum gases in microgravity. Submitted research proposals are expected to propose activities related to: 1) flight research on ultra-cold atoms and degenerate quantum gases using the Cold Atom Laboratory; the flight investigation will have to be consistent with the flexibility and capability anticipated for CAL in its present design configuration, though minor modifications to the design suggested by PIs will be accommodated to the extent feasible and depending upon the availability of agency resources; 2) ground research on ultra-cold atoms and quantum gases that can lead to future flight experiments with an upgraded CAL facility, as well as to future follow-on missions using a new experiment facility utilizing ultra-cold atoms and Bose-Einstein Condensates for fundamental physics measurements, especially atom interferometer experiments using ultra-cold atoms; or 3) collaboration with European scientists to use the German Aerospace Center (DLR) drop tower facilities in Bremen, Germany, to conduct experiments that will advance science and technology for future ultra-cold atoms research in space for both scientific investigations and technology validation relevant to CAL, cold atom physics, and future cold atom experiments in space. In fiscal year (FY) 2013, NSF started an initiative to encourage and foster research in Sustainable Chemistry, Engineering, and Materials (SusChEM), partially in response to the mandate of the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010. The SusChEM initiative addresses the interrelated challenges of sustainable supply, engineering, production, and use of chemicals and materials. In FY 2014, the participating divisions are Chemistry (CHE); Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET); Materials Research (DMR); Earth Sciences (EAR); and the Materials Engineering and Processing program in the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI). 27-8 Dear Colleague Letter: Information to Principal Investigators (PIS) Planning to Submit Proposals to the Sensors and Sensing Systems (SSS) Program October 1, 2013, Deadline (NSF)
The Sensors and Sensing Systems (SSS) program will be conducting a proposal review pilot test of a modified proposal review process utilizing proposals submitted to the SSS program for the October 1, 2013, proposal submission deadline. Submission of a proposal to this program for this deadline will imply your willingness to participate in the process. The purpose of this pilot is to seek new approaches to proposal review that can lower the cost of the review process, improve the quality of reviews, and reduce the workload on the reviewer community, while not discouraging the submission of collaborative or highly innovative proposals. Briefly, the review process shall consist of the following: 1) Proposals will be subject to ad hoc review only. There will be no panel review of these proposals. 2) All proposals submitted to the SSS program will be organized into groups consisting of approximately 25 to 40 proposals. 3) Each PI whose proposal is assigned to a group will be assigned to review and rank seven other proposals also in that group. Review assignments will be made so as to avoid organizational or individual conflicts-of-interest. 4) All PIs must complete their review and ranking of the seven assigned proposals within 30 days of the date of their assignment. Failure to complete this review and ranking within the allotted time will result in the disqualification of the PI's own proposal. 5) A composite ranking of all proposals in each group will be determined, and each PI's proposal ranking will be adjusted based on a measure of the "quality" of the reviews provided by the PI. The adjustment is designed to provide an incentive to all PIs to do an honest and thorough job of reviewing the proposals to which they are assigned. 6) Final aggregation of proposals across the groups and award/declination decision making will be done by the Program Director as currently done. The mission of the Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund is to support sustainable communities and environmental stewardship by funding research, scholarships, and education programs essential to the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge in the fields of arboriculture and urban forestry. Applications are currently being accepted for two of the fund's research grant programs: 1) John Z. Duling Grants of up to $10,000 provide seed funding or partial support for innovative research and technology transfer projects that have the potential to benefit the everyday work of arborists. Priority funding areas include root and soil management, planting and establishment, plant health care, risk assessment and worker safety, and urban forestry. Projects are expected to be completed within one to three years. 2) Jack Kimmel International Grants of up to $10,000 provide research project support to arboriculture and urban forestry researchers all over the world. Priority funding areas include root and soil management, planting and establishment, plant health care, risk assessment and worker safety, and urban forestry. The Prometeo Project is an initiative that seeks to promote and strengthen education, scientific research, innovation and technological development in strategic areas in the country. This Project contemplates the Ecuadorian and foreign researchers with wide wand well-known experience in their particular area of study, such as technology, innovation and productivity, take up their residence in Ecuador in order to develop their research projects within 4 to 12 months (not necessarily consecutive) in Ecuadorian public institutions. Prometeo also aims to recover Ecuadorian talents that are currently living in foreign countries and offers local incentives for them to return. Potential areas of research are: Natural heritage, environment and biodiversity; Health studies; Sustainable agricultural development and fisheries; and Human Sciences, IT and risk management.
