24-2 Joint DMS/NIGMS Initiative to Support Research at the Interface of the Biological and Mathematical Sciences (DMS/NIGMS) (NSF/NIH)
The Division of Mathematical Sciences in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health plan to support research in mathematics and statistics on questions in the biological and biomedical sciences. Both agencies recognize the need and urgency for promoting research at the interface between the mathematical sciences and the life sciences. This competition is designed to encourage new collaborations, as well as to support existing ones.Examples of areas of research that are appropriate under this competition include the following: Evolutionary or ecological population dynamics; Differentiation and developmental processes; Explanatory and predictive models of cellular behavior; Molecular and cellular networks; Novel and unique approaches to the prediction of molecular structure; Simulations of the human systemic responses to burn, trauma and other injury; and New approaches to understanding system-wide effects of pharmacological agents and anesthetics, and their genetic and environmental modifiers. The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation provides mid-career grants to professionals working in the fields of historic preservation, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, decorative arts, architectural design, and architectural history. Fitch Mid-Career grants of up to $15,000 are awarded annually to one or two mid-career professionals with at least ten years of experience and an academic background, professional experience, and an established identity in one or more of the eligible fields. The foundation will consider proposals for research and/or execution of a preservation-related project in any of the eligible fields. Projects will be evaluated based on a range of criteria, including the potential for the project to make a meaningful contribution to the academic and/or professional field of historic preservation in the United States and the innovativeness and creativity of the planned project. Since 2010, the Department of Energy has supported research fellowships for the hydropower industry. These fellowships have proven to be very impactful to the hydropower industry. The U. S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) invites applications for projects with substantial NIST participation that will support the following NIST Engineering Laboratory programs: Disaster Resilience of Buildings, Infrastructure, and Communities. NIST is seeking applications from eligible applicants to develop, organize, and convene a workshop on disaster resilient buildings, infrastructure, and communities to prevent and/or mitigate disasters resulting from natural and man-made hazards. The recipient will work with NIST to identify and engage key international and domestic thought leaders to lead the workshop, gathering experts from the following disciplines: structures and lifelines engineering, emergency response, codes and standard development, fire science and engineering, economics, government, and academia. Sustainable Construction and Manufacturing: Progress toward greater sustainability in the built environment and the manufacturing sector is a necessary step to better enable resource efficiency for our nation. NIST is seeking applications from eligible applicants to work with NIST to develop, organize, and convene a workshop on sustainability that will promote the adoption and use of sustainable construction and manufacturing and guide NIST in developing a portfolio of programs that are focused on providing the enabling measurement science to key industry stakeholders. Firefighting in the U.S. can be significantly advanced by leveraging the massive quantities of available data (sensor and archival), computer power, communication technologies, and fire dynamics knowledge to enable markedly better situational awareness, predictive models, deployment models, and tactical decision-making on the fireground. Through its Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry program, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to further the development of scientific leadership in the field of environmental chemistry. The program is open to all academic and other not-for-profit organizations in the states, districts, and territories of the United States. Applications are accepted from principal investigators with well-established research experience in environmental science or engineering. The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan is pleased to announce an open competition for assistance awards through this Request for Grant Proposals (RFGP). PAS Kabul invites all eligible organizations to submit a proposal for a cooperative agreement to establish a university partnership between a college or university in the United States and Herat University, Herat, Afghanistan in the field of agriculture. The Department of Agriculture is the largest of 14 schools (faculties) at Herat University, with 801 students, 150 of whom are women. The Herat University Department of Agriculture's overarching objective is to develop technical experts in the fields of agronomy, animal husbandry, horticulture, plant protection and agricultural extension. The Herat University Chancellor, recognizing the role that agriculture plays in Afghanistan's economy and with an eye to the future, has identified the agriculture faculty as a priority for further development so that its graduates can better plan and manage Afghanistan's agricultural resources and economy.
